The annual Freddie Gomez Memorial Conjunto Concert is scheduled for September 1, 2018 in downtown Brownsville, Texas at East Levee and 11th Street from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm.  This is a FREE public family event, now in its eighth year.

You may ask, “Why is it named after Freddie Gomez?” or “Who is Freddie Gomez?”

Alfredo “Freddie” Gomez, also known as “El Ciclon del Valle,” was a Conjunto pioneer from Brownsville, who had an impact in the genre during the late 1950’s. He died at the age of 73 on September 3, 2005.

“Although Conjunto icon Gilberto Perez was the first to play the electric guitar in Conjunto;  Freddie Gomez’s unique style of playing the electric guitar was credited for the introduction of the electric guitar to Conjunto music,” said Lupe Saenz, President of the South Texas Conjunto Association.

In the 1960s, Freddie played with Ruben Vela and Gilberto Perez, and stopped performing professionally in 1971.

He made the song “El Soldado Razo” famous during the Vietnam war, a song about a soldier who joined the military leaving to war with mixed emotions of honor, excitement and worry about leaving his mother behind.

Gomez’s skills gave him the title of Bass Player of the Century by the South Texas Conjunto Association and was inducted into the South Texas Hall of Fame in San Benito, Texas.

Destiny Navaira with Rueben Valdez | Rueben Rambles YouTube

Destiny Navaira says Tejano music needs to evolve for in an exclusive interview with “Rueben Rambles” YouTube channel.

The two-time Tejano Music Award winner spoke to “Rueben Rambles” host Rueben Valdez about her opinion on the needs for the Tejano music industry to grow.

“It was time I stated my opinion and thoughts on the industry and what I think needs to happen to continue the growth,” said Navaira about the interview on her Facebook page. “I am passionate about evolving Tejano music and I hope this helps spread the love I have to many more!”

In the 25-minute interview posted on Sunday, Navaira also spoke about taking Tejano to the next level with the wave of new artists and bridging the gap between older Tejano generation and the next generation of Tejanos.

“Bringing this genre up as a whole and relaying to, not just the fans, but my fellow artists, to people in the industry, that we can make this big again,” she said. “We need to open our eyes and we need to evolve and that’s the biggest thing. The evolution of this music could be so much quicker and so much faster, if we figure out a way to get out, I’m not saying throw away the classics…believe me, I can listen to old Mazz, to old (La) Mafia, old Emilio all day long…but we need to realize that, maybe, because it doesn’t sound like that music, doesn’t mean that it’s not our genre. Evolution that’s the theme of this talk.”

Navaira is a member of Grupo Remedio, a band that also features her brother Rigo Navaira. and is the next generation of the Navaira musical family. She is the daughter of Raulito Navaira. and niece of late Tejano icon Emilio Navaira.

Remedio swept the new artist categories at the 2016 Tejano Music Awards, winning “Best New Group,” “Best New Female” for Destiny and “Best New Male” for Rigo after the release of their debut album Siempre Cantando.  The band has since released another album, Alivia Tu Corazón, and are currently working on their next album.

A new Tejano co-lab of a classic Latin Breed song brings together three bands from two states to produce an amazing collaboration for all of Tejano Nation.

Colorado-based BTS Band featuring Emanuel J has released “Tomando Mil Copas,” with former Latin Breed vocalist Ruben Cubillos and two members of the horn section from LA•45, John Ontiveros and Leonardo Téllez. It was produced by 14-time Grammy winning producer Gilbert Velasquez.

The collaboration bridges two generations of Tejano fans and shows that music has no boundaries.

“What’s important is not so much about the song, but the story behind it,” BTS Band said in a Facebook post. “It’s about bringing back the fun, making music and bringing together two generations. It’s not about the song choice, but about bringing to life music that fuels our soul, it’s music I personally grew up with, but most importantly we want to capture the heart of the Tejano music lovers and for the greater good of the culture.”

BTS means Behind The Scenes and the scenes behind this collaboration are definitely a recipe for success. This is the second single released by BTS Band, it’s the follow-up to their debut single “Una Vez Mas,” released earlier this year.

Joe Lopez

The results of a lie detector test with Joe Lopez have been revealed.

News Center 23 reports the results say the former Tejano singer did not have sex with his teenage niece, a crime he was convicted of in 2006 and spent more than decade in prison.

Lopez was asked questions about the crimes, but the questions are confidential and part of Lopez’s writ of habeas corpus as his legal team works toward exoneration.

Sandra Vallejo, manager for Lopez, says the results determine that he is telling the truth.

“Joe is an innocent man,” Vallejo told News Center 23 reporter Derick Garcia. “He did not commit this crime and that he literally served almost 12 years in prison for something he did not do.”

A polygraph and a sex evaluation are required six months after a convict is discharged from prison, according to News Center 23.

The DNA results that also helped to convict Lopez are also being retested, but results of those tests have yet to be released.

Lopez was released on parole in March, but he is not a free man. After more than 11 years in prison, the co-founder of Grammy winning group Mazz, has to wear an ankle monitor and spend most of his time inside. He is under extensive supervision with limited time out of his home, for now.

Tejano music legend Gilbert “Gibby” Escobedo was honored by the State of Texas for his career accomplishments and his vital influence on the Texas music scene.

Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott, along with the Texas Music Division, honored Escobedo by flying a Texas Flag in his name over the Texas State Capitol building in Austin, Texas on Tuesday. This tribute was presented to Escobedo for his vital influence on Tejano music and the Texas music scene for a career that has spanned over five decades.

“It is due to his dedication as an accomplished saxophonist and his vision that has kept the Tejano music industry at the forefront and helped make San Antonio the capital of Tejano music,” said Gov. Abbot in a press release.

Escobedo is known in the Tejano music industry as the master mind, along with Rudy R. Trevino, who put Tejano music on the map creating the Tejano Music Awards in the early 1980s, along with numerous other music industry shows and events.

He has always had a passion for the big band brass sound and along with Rudy Guerra formed legendary Latin Breed. His genius helped to launch careers for many famed artists such as Jay Perez, Adalberto Gallegos and the incomparable Jimmy Edward.

Escobedo has had the honor of playing with some of the industries greatest bands, including the Del Reys, Sunny and the Sunliners, and Jay Perez, to name a few.  Never having lost the passion for music he has continued his journey playing with other countless bands and showcasing the horn section sound that still thrills today.

It’s just a matter of time now to go the court and talk to a judge and let him decide.”

Singer Devin Banda announced plans to launch her own “Unstoppable” reality vlog (video log) on Tuesday, to give fans a behind the scenes look of the Tejano singer’s music journey. The vlog’s name is the same as the title of her debut album Unstoppable, released in 2017.

The vlog will air weekly beginning this month on Banda’s YouTube channel. It will follow the life and journey of the 23-year-old singer along with her band, family and many friends, as well as musical industry familiar faces.

Banda has proven to be fearless when it comes to creativity and thinking outside the box. Her musical journey has been colorful to say the least. She has battled bullying since the beginning of her career, an obstacle she still takes on to this day.

“Bullying being one of her most important topics which spawned her lead role in the anti-bully festival produced in her honor after posting a heartfelt plea for bullies to understand the damage bullying can do to someone, whom is not as strong as she has to be,” said a press release. “Devin is now helping others to overcome, as well as being a young female artist in what has always been a male dominated industry.”

Her debut album has been a huge success, spawning five radio hits and crossing over into Mexico with radio airplay.
