Garza revealed how the pairing was made during an interview with Tejano Nation radio affiliate KLMO 98.9 FM on Wednesday. One of Pardi’s best friends is the son of Garza’s old schoolmate. Javi Guerra remakes Luis Miguel hit with a cumbia spin

Tejano vocalist Javi Guerra just released his cumbia version of a Luis Miguel hit from the 1990s, “Hasta Que Me Olvides,” and the unlikely take on what was initially a ballad works.

Guerra’s smooth but intense vocals keep the song’s intended passionate feel while the upbeat cumbia rhythm provides listeners with a fresh version of a new classic.

Guerra said he has long been a fan of the Luis Miguel song, released in 1993 and written by Juan Luis Guerra, which inspired him to create a unique version “with the blend of modern and classic Tejano.”

“‘Hasta Que Me Olvides’ has always been one of my favorite songs ever since I was a young kid,” Guerra said. “So I decided to record a cumbia version of my own.”

The Rio Grande Valley singer has released several singles from his latest album, “Un Nuevo Comienzo,” which came out in September 2019.

More singles will follow but this catchy cumbia cover is the latest and shows how Tejano artists are influenced by a diversity of sounds, including Latin pop and tropical.

Longtime singer/songwriter Gerardo “Jerry” Alvarez officially launched his solo career this week with the single and video release of the catchy Tejano/Norteño/Country fusion, “Te Vuelves Loca.”

For years, Alvarez has written for top Tejano and Regional Mexican artists from Los Palominos, Solido, Elida Reyna, Banda El Recodo and more, with his songs appearing on several Latin GRAMMY-winning and nominated albums. From 1999 to 2017, Alvarez was the lead singer for Los Gallitos and was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY for Best Tejano Album in 2016.

In an exclusive interview with Tejano Nation, Alvarez said the major step into a solo career has him feeling a mix of emotions.

“I’m happy, excited, but nervous for embarking on a new venture,” he said. “I was so used to being in a group. I first started in a band at the age of 15.”

But with his family’s encouragement that he share his songs directly with the world, Alvarez felt supported to record the songs that he felt were meant for him to sing.

“As a songwriter, I have a good collection of songs that nobody has heard or recorded because I don’t think they fit anybody so I don’t send them out,” said Alvarez. “I would sing these songs at home and always had great compliments from my family… A lot of support from home has brought me to this point and encouraged me to to show the world songs that I feel have a lot of heart and are unique.”

The first release, “Te Vuelves Loca,” features a catchy chorus and Alvarez’ vocals skillfully handle the song’s Tejano/Norteño and Country sound. The video, directed by Ryan Bazan, is funny and entertaining, showing off Alvarez’ acting talent. The video’s storyline depicts Alvarez’ character at a carnival where he sneakily spends time with each member of a trio of friends who all succumb to his charms.

Alvarez said he and co-writers penned the songs that will be featured on the upcoming solo album. “Te Vuelves Loca” was written by Alvarez and Miguel A. Lopez.  The album’s sound will feature a diverse range of musical genres.

“The music in this album will be a fusion of different styles of music merged together,” he said. “You can call it a Tejano, Country, Rockabilly, Reggaeton, Norteño sound!  I just call it good music!”

Listeners can look forward to the album’s release for more songs that Alvarez carefully selected for his solo debut.

“I have always said, ‘Every song finds its home,’ and I believe these songs are meant for me to sing,” Alvarez said.

Tejano and Chicano music legend Jimmy Edward has passed away, according to sources. He was 68.

The singer was known as the iconic voice of countless hits over his career of more than five decades. An original member of The Latin Breed, the legendary band confirmed the news of his passing on Sunday via social media, “You mentored many and inspired thousands throughout your career. Thank you, Jimmy, for leaving us your footprints…every step of the way.”

As news of Jimmy Edward’s passing traveled throughout the Tejano music industry, Tejano stars took to social media to express their sadness for the loss of the Tejano legend.

David Marez shared details on his last meeting with Jimmy Edward, “Jimmy I am heartbroken. I didn’t know when I saw you two weeks ago my friend it would be my last. I will treasure our last conversation. What an amazing gift you left us with…that undeniable gift of your voice. We will see each other again my brother, heaven just gained an incredible voice. Never will I lose that memory.

Shelly Lares shared her grief on the singer’s passing, ” I heard the news about my dear friend, Tejano ICON and legend Jimmy Edward…words cannot explain the love and respect I will always have for him. He was a good Faithful man of God and an AMAZING vocalist. I have so many memories of him and I will continue to hold them close to my heart. I pray for peace and comfort for his entire family. Thank you for the amazing way you moved us thru your beautiful character and your amazing music. Rest in peace my brother, till we meet again.”

The crooner is considered by many as a legend in his own time and one of Tejano’s most remarkable vocalists. Jimmy Edward recently celebrated 56 years in the music industry. According to an Entertainment Legends of San Antonio bio, he started at the tender age of 12 playing bass with a local high school band when the band lost their lead singer it was Jimmy Edward’s time to shine and the rest is history.

Jimmy Edward was born on March 16, 1951, in San Antonio, Texas. In 1969, he helped form the original Latin Breed, one of Tejanos music’s most creatively and commercially successful groups. The band produced several albums – the popular Return of the Latin Breed and Mas Latin Breed – as well as perhaps the first Tejano anthem, the song “El Tejano Enamorado”.

Jimmy Edward went solo in 1975 with his debut album Memories, which contained mostly English songs but also featured the old Mexican classic “Diez y Seis Anos,” which became a mega-hit reaching #4 on the Billboard regional chart. In 1982, he scored again with “Tu Prieto.” In the 1990s he began to singing Spanish-language Christian Music.

Captivated by Latin contemporary Christian music, Edward released a Latin gospel album, Cristianos (Christians), in April 1996. Edward released two more full-lengths, Tejano Allstars and My Special Album, over the course of the next few years.

In recent years, Jimmy, a devoted Christian, has dedicated himself to traveling throughout the state with his own ministry evangelizing and testifying to the life-changing message of Jesus Christ while still maintaining his Tejano roots.

Marcus Daniels is one of Tejano music’s emerging artists. He’s been compared to Dee Burleson and the late “El Charro Negro” Bobby Butler, two of his musical influences. Now, the singer from Waco, Texas has released a duet with Burleson titled “Tu No Te Metas.”

Produced by Sotero Seniceros, this track brings back the nostalgia of old school Tejano by merging the old with the new featuring the charismatic vocals of Burleson. The sound he’s most known for during his many years as part of the group Culturas.

“It’s a really cool, fun duet that we put together,” Daniels told Tejano Nation. “This is a progressive Conjunto song, we have some keys and horns in it, so it’s a really nice danceable song.”

“‘Tu No Te Metas’ is just two guys battling it out, fighting over a girl and with Dee and the charisma and the spunk, energy, he brings on stage, he does it in his music as well,” added Daniels. “It brought my performance up as well, trying to compete with him, it brought me up to another level I really believe.”

“Tu No Te Metas” is the lead single from Daniels’ upcoming third album titled “Cumbiaville” that will also feature production from Gabriel Zavala and is expected to be released in late summer or early fall.

Burleson is scheduled to perform at Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, March 14, on the Gateway Stage at 6:45 pm and he’s expected to bring Daniels on stage to perform the duet and other songs.

He and Selena were married on April 2, 1992 in Nueces County, Texas, when she was 20 and he was 22.

After the Chris Pérez Band went on hiatus, Pérez joined A.B. Quintanilla’s music group, Los Kumbia Kings, in 2003. Los Dinos performed together at the Selena ¡VIVE! tribute concert on April 7, 2005. In the summer of 2006, A.B. Quintanilla started a new band called Kumbia All Starz, with Pérez as their lead guitarist.

Deeply connected to their Hispanic heritage but loving the vibe of American Rock the Chris Perez Band delivers a sound infused with swaggering guitar riffs, stadium-sized hooks, and captivating lyrics. This year will see the band make a comeback with the re-release of their Grammy-winning album Resurrection via Hollywood Records, coupled with multi shows scheduled for Spring and Summer.

Abraham Quintanilla plans to set the record straight in an autobiography scheduled to be released later this year.

“Today I finally finished the last chapter of my book that I have been writing for the last few months,” Quintanilla announced via social media on Feb. 27.  “Since my daughter Selena died, I was wanting to write a book.”

The book was recorded and documented by Nancy De Los Santos, a co-producer of the 1995 movie Selena.

“The public might not be aware that there are about 21 unauthorized books written about Selena and none of the writers ever interviewed Selena,” said Quintanilla.

“I feel that the most ugly book was written by Telemundo’s Maria Celeste Arraras, the woman for reasons which I can’t understand, took sides with the woman who killed Selena,” he said about the Arraras’ book “Selena’s Secret,” originally published in 1997. “My family and I and Chris Perez know exactly what happened, as l mentioned, none of the writers or even Maria Celeste ever interviewed Selena.”

According to Latin Groove Music, “the book is filled with hope, triumph, heartbreak, tragedy, and undying love. We will get to hear the complete story about Abraham Quintanilla, Los Dinos, Selena Y Los Dinos, and all the events that brought us to today, when we celebrate the life and the legacy of the beautiful and forever loved, Selena Quintanilla.”
