La 45 collaborate with music legend Little Joe to reconceptualize classic hit 'Traigo Mi .45' [AUDIO]

La 45 is crossing generational and musical lines with every note they play. The #NextGenChicanos have entered the Roaring 20s” with one goal; to re-establish the brass sound of the Onda Chicana as a driving force in the music industry. What better way to do that than to collaborate with the man whose name is synonymous with Chicano music...Little Joe!

The five-time Grammy award winner and pioneer of the genre join La 45  on their latest single, a re-envisioned take on the classic song “Traigo Mi .45”.

Mike Torres III, a founding member of LA 45, shared details on the origin of this collaboration and the personal and historical significance of this recording:

“When John (Ontiveros, co-founding member of LA 45) and I first started putting this band together back in 2017, we knew we wanted to name our new group after a Little Joe song,” said Torres. “It was our way of paying tribute to the King and showing the kind of impact he has had on our lives both musically and personally.

“As soon as we decided on the name LA 45, we knew that if we were ever going to record that song, we would only do it if we could get Joe to sing on the track with us,” he added. “There was no other way we would want to do it! Joe has done many collaborations, great songs, with other artists. But we feel like this one is extra special because we are direct musical descendants of his legacy.”

Torres and Ontiveros are former members of La Familia, spending many years in the band.

“We shared the stage with him night after night, we learned so much from him, and we really use his career as a sort of blueprint or road map for how we are trying to continue that legacy and that sound with the new generation,” said Torres. “When we sit back and really think about it, we can’t help but feel like this is something very special,…historic even.”

The release of this single kicks off what will be the busiest year yet for La 45. A cross country tour in support of their new album due out this March is being announced in February that includes dates in California, Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and their home state of Texas with more dates to be added for the second half of the year!

Fans can follow the band on social media via Facebook and Instagram and can get all the latest news through their website www.la45music.com .

Formed in 2017, LA 45 is a 10 piece orquesta based in San Antonio, Texas. Performing a blend of traditional Mexican-American music with jazz, funk, and R&B; the band is the next wave of the Onda Chicana popularized in the 1970s. Led by two former members of the iconic Chicano band, Little Joe y La Familia, LA 45 is made up of the top young talent in the state of Texas. The band’s third record release will come in March, just ahead of their 2020 national tour.

Legendary musician Juan M. Rodriguez of Grupo Romance passes away

Tejano music legend Juan M. Rodriguez of Grupo Romance and other legendary Tejano groups passed away from cancer on Tuesday.

Grupo Romance confirmed the news of Rodriguez’s passing via social media. “One of the best musicians that could ever be has passed away this very day,” the group posted on their official Facebook page. “You might not have known him cause he was never a showboat or a person who was (loud) and carried an obnoxious behavior but he was one of the greatest.”

According to a GoFundMe page set up this month by Rodriguez’s son, Johnny Rodriguez, the legendary musician was suffering from adrenal gland cancer and had also suffered a fractured lumbar causing severe back pain. He was receiving care at a cancer treatment center in Houston including chemotherapy.

Juan M. Rodriguez was a legendary Tejano musician playing accordion and bass during his career that began in the 1960s. He was a member of legendary band Snowball and Co. that featured late Tejano icon Laura Canales. He also played with Tierra Blanca and Felicidad.

“Juan was always instrumental in dealing with arrangements and arranging voices and things of that nature, a very well disciplined musician,” said Miro Valdez, a long life friend and band member with Rodriguez. “We have lost a very talented and wonderful human being and he will be missed dearly.”

La 45 is the next generation of Chicano music and the 10-piece band has teamed with music legend Little Joe to record an updated version of the song from which the group took its name.

“This song was something that John and I had in mind when we started the band,” said Torres. “This is one of the bucket list items that we had to get and the only way we were going to do it is if we got our old boss and our mentor Little Joe to be on the track.”

Torres and Ontiveros spent many years as part of Little Joe’s band La Familia and plan to continue the tradition of the Chicano music sound.

“You’re going to hear the merging of two generations,” added Torres. “We’re going to continue to carry that flag and continue to play Chicano music as far all over the world as we can.”

Ray Ray, an ASCAP Latin songwriter, saw a need and filled it with “Feliz Cumpleaños,” which he hopes will become the go-to Tejano version of “Happy Birthday” when Tejanos celebrate their special day. While the song is short and sweet, it says it all.

Brenda Martinez releases romantic bolero just in time for Valentine's Day [AUDIO]

Brenda Martinez | Photo: Mariaelena Arocha / Tejano Nation

There is nothing is more romantic sounding than a bolero. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Brenda Martinez has released the bolero, “Un Presentimiento,” the third single from her debut album Favoritas De Mis Padres.

“Un Presentimiento” is a classic ranchera ballad that has been covered in various styles by different artists, from the mariachi version of Jose Alfredo Jimenez and Amalia Mendoza to the romantic Conjunto bolero version from Ruben Naranjo. Martinez’s interpretation is a beautiful, smooth instrumental re-imagining of the Naranjo cover, which inspires those who know the lyrics to sing along to the melody.

The album, Favoritas De Mis Padres, is a collection of Conjunto tunes, paying homage to the classic instrumental Conjunto albums of masters like Naranjo, Gilberto Perez, and Ruben Vela. The influence of late Latin music icon Selena Quintanilla can be seen in many of today’s singers and stars, including actress Renée Zellwegger.

The Texas native was honored with an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday for her role in “Judy,” the film on the life of another icon, Judy Garland.

In her acceptance speech, Zellwegger spoke about her heroes including the “Queen of Cumbia” Selena.

“Our heroes united us…the best among us, who inspire us to find the best in ourselves,” said Zellwegger. “When we look to our heroes, we agree, and that matters. Neil Armstong, Sally Ride, Dolores Huerta, Venus and Serena and Selena, Bob Dylan, Scorsese, Fred Rogers, Harriet Tubman.”

Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, shared a video of the speech via social media with the caption, “Touching moment to hear my sister Selena’s name mentioned in a major moment for Rene Zellweger. Thank you for acknowledging her as Hero tonite at the Oscars.”

Sunny Sauceda releases new love song and video for Valentine’s Day

Just in time for the year’s most romantic holiday, Valentine’s Day, Tejano Music Awards 2019 Entertainer of the Year and three-time GRAMMY-winner Sunny Sauceda releases the first single from his upcoming Solstice Records album.

The song, “Solo Es Ella,” features lovelorn lyrics that listeners will fall in love with and explores a new Tejano/Norteño sound for Sauceda and his band, Y Todo Eso. “Solo Es Ella” was recorded last December in Mexico.

“’Solo Es Ella’ highlights how the love of my life’s voice is the soundtrack of my life,” Sauceda said.

A video shot at Brackenridge Park in downtown San Antonio features Sauceda’s wife, Vickie, who directed the video with Tejano Music Awards-winning director Ryan Bazan.

“It was fun acting out in front of the camera,” Sauceda said. “My wife did a way better job than I did, believe it or not. I was a little camera-shy and she was the one coaching me through the entire video.”

The video features scenes between Sauceda and his wife such as the two enjoying time in the park, and her discovering a rose left for her on a bridge. The band, dressed formally, is featured in night scenes.

The love song was written by Sauceda along with songwriter and producer Ulises Emmanuel with production and arrangement by JJ Silva. Sauceda worked on the concept with Emmanuel and Silva in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

“The song was my idea and concept and Emmanuel made it a reality,” Sauceda said. “Then, Silva added a cool arrangement.”

The song’s intro with Sauceda’s accordion and passionate vocals then leads immediately into a sound that leans heavily toward Tejano/Norteño. The production is top-notch, the writing superb and Sauceda and his band’s performance caps off a song sure to become a fan favorite albeit a different sound than the accordion-abuse, cumbia style for which Sauceda is known.

The video lends an even more romantic feel that matches the song’s style and flavor.
