Lucky Joe, Stevie D, and more artists have canceled their Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair performances over concern for the current coronavirus outbreak.

After other major music festivals including South By Southwest in Austin, Ultra Music Festival in Miami and others have canceled their event or postponed until later in the year like Coachella, the Texas Talent Musicians Association says Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair will go on as planned for March 12 – 15 at historic Market Square in San Antonio, Texas.

“After discussions with management and my label, I have decided it would be best to cancel my appearance,” Lucky Joe said in a statement released on Tuesday. “The coronavirus situation is a very serious matter that has everyone on high alert. I sincerely regret having to make this decision, but my team and I felt it would be best for our fans, our crew, and band members.”

“It is with great regret that I announce that after speaking with management, City Officials and my label, we will be postponing our TTMA/Univision Fan Fair appearances this year,” Stevie D said in a statement released on Wednesday. “I know that there are a lot of people coming in from out of town and this will likely be upsetting, however, the Coronavirus situation is quite the serious one.”

Other artists that have canceled their performance or appearance at Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair include Isabel Marie Sanchez, Dody Y Nivel and Veronique Medrano, Medrano canceled after she was injured in a serious auto accident last weekend.

Univision canceled their separate Fan Fair event on Wednesday citing concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. Univision Fan Fair was scheduled for Travis Park in San Antonio from March 13 – 15. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo shut down the rest of their event on Wednesday with 11 days remaining on the schedule.

The World Health Organization called coronavirus disease, COVID-19, to be a pandemic for the first time on Wednesday (March 11). Meanwhile, the United States now has more than 1,000 people infected with coronavirus — but testing in the U.S. is still ramping up, meaning that number could continue to climb.

Jacob Rene

Jacob René has grown up surrounded by Tejano music all his life. Having both parents listening to music in the household helped to shape the musician he is now.

The Odessa, Texas native found a love for music at the age of three years old. Jacob René recalls going to church and singing on a regular basis. His fondest memory is when the choir was singing and he walked up to the choir and confidently started singing too.  After that day he became part of the church choir.

Living in West Texas, Jacob started constructing his musical journey while listening to pop music like Christina Aguilera and Michael Jackson but always kept Tejano in the background. At the age of five, Jacob Rene started singing Tejano music. He had always felt that Tejano had actually chosen him.

The vocalist describes his style as classic and fresh.

Jacob René studied music at Odessa College and his talents include playing the piano and writing music. He would love to collaborate with Tejano music icon Shelly Lares one day. He admires “Little Miss Dynamite” for her hard work and the love she has in entertaining.
