Eagle Pass native Karina Castillon grew up watching and listening to her brother Jose Castillon Jr. and cousin Carlos (Charlie) Castillon practice in the garage of their home.
From those long into the night sessions to the spontaneous mini-concerts that took place. She was part of their musical journey even traveling alongside sometimes as they performed with different bands such as Gary Hobbsand Joe Garcia Y Los Amigos. Garcia is the father of Jimmy and Joey of the Garcia Bros., one of the most prolific groups known for their “Pachuco” style and rhythmic Conjunto sound.
Upon the release of “Las Miradas” by Hobbs, the excitement grew as the two were officially part of the recording.
Carlos (Charlie) Castillon is second to your left end and Jose Castillon Jr. on the far right end.
Shortly after Jose Castillon Jr. decided to venture out to pursue higher education, the music never left him and sometime later alongside some friends he formed a group.
That’s when Karina at the age of fifteen was asked to join and without hesitation, she made her debut at her own Quinceanera.
For eight consecutive years, the group played at various events and venues. Things seemed to be going great as they even recorded some original material.
Then out of nowhere due to some unforeseen circumstances, the group came to a halt.
Life events had taken them into different directions.
In 2015, they came back together and took the stage as the group now named Pin.
They became a household name and well known in their hometown and surrounding areas.
“The response we’ve received was so amazing and truly humbling,” said Karina.
After a couple of years with the group, she wanted to take things a step further and entered a talent contest in San Antonio, becoming one of the finalists. She was awarded a recording at Luz-Mex Records by Jose “Pepe” Leon.
Shortly thereafter, she was in the studio in which he wrote the song “Beso Hechizado” and recorded it alongside producer Anthony Perez. It was released in 2018 and well received by the industry.
“I was so overwhelmed by such positive feedback,” said Karina.
In February 2018, after opening up for Stefani Montiel, she got to me meet someone she had always wanted to work with. One of the industries most prolific entertainers and producers Gabriel Zavala.
Karina knew she wanted something different for her next single. She had this idea for a song and presented it to him. The 2013 song from Jenny and the Mexicats, “Me Voy A Ir,” but with the Zavala flare!
The studio session to record the song was an experience on its own.
“He is a mastermind at his craft but is also very open to the ideas, thoughts and suggestions the artist may have throughout,” said Karina.
Can we go ahead and make it official?
Will those two songs be part of that certain album?
“I am very happy, proud and humbled to say, yes,” said Karina. “The response from the public has been wonderful and I am very grateful for everyone that has attended our shows and played my music. It’s because of them I’ve been given that desire to fulfill a dream and complete a project that has been in the works for so long. Thank you all so much for your continued support.”
With that here is the exclusive video premiere of “Me Voy A Ir,” the second released single as an independent artist for Karina Castillon, directed by Johnny Davila.

When GRAMMY-winning Tejano vocalist and accordionist Sunny Sauceda takes the stage Oct. 26 at San Antonio’s 13th Annual AccessAbility Fest, he will represent Tejano music for a rewarding cause and one that’s especially close to his heart.
The AccessAbility Fest from 9am-2pm, Saturday, Oct. 26, in downtown San Antonio’s Market Square and Milam Park is an event that will feature more than 170 activities and exhibitors that promote “independence and inclusion,” according to the festival site, for individuals who live with disabilities and their caretakers.
“It’s important for me to perform at events like these because we live it every day,” Sauceda said.
Sauceda and his wife, Vickie, have a nine-year-old son with special needs, who uses a wheelchair.
Sauceda will perform at 11:30 a.m. on the San Saba Stage in the historic Market Square.
The musician, well-known for his entertaining live shows, said he attended the festival about three years ago and wondered why there wasn’t any live music featured at the event.
“I thought ‘I would love to come play for special needs kids,’ because I know it’s so hard to take them to concerts in San Antonio,” Sauceda said. “I’ve even brought it to the attention of the San Antonio Music Commission that we actually need dedicated handicap areas for all concerts downtown throughout San Antonio and surrounding areas.”
Even at his own concerts, Sauceda said his family has experienced the frustration of trying to take his son to watch his father perform.
“My wife and in-laws watch our son while we play and they try to go into the crowd,” Sauceda said. “People are just rude and don’t care. They will stand in front of people sitting in a wheelchair.”
Sauceda said there needs to be more awareness about people who live with disabilities and for all those who use a wheelchair.
“(My family), they usually stand to the back and I think that is so wrong and a disservice to our veterans who are in wheelchairs, the elderly and those with special needs,” Sauceda said.
This year’s AccessAbility Fest, which is a combined effort of hundreds of partner organizations and businesses, will feature an inaugural abilitySTRONG parade and march at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, on the streets of downtown San Antonio. The 2019 theme for the parade is: “Awareness…We’re Stronger Together.”
Melanie Cawthon is co-founder and executive director of disABILITYsa, whose mission is “to educate, advance, and engage individuals with disabilities by sharing information, creating opportunities, and strengthening organizations that serve them.”
disABILITYsa is a major supporter of this year’s AccessAbility Parade and Fest and Cawthon said she is excited about Sauceda’s participation in the event as hewill be joined in his performance by a fan who has represented the special needs community in San Antonio.
“Sunny became involved with the AccessAbility fest through his connection with accordion player, Steven Rodriguez,” Cawthon said. “Steven served as a Duke on the 2014 Fiesta Especial Royal Court working to create visibility for the leadership and contributions that individuals with disabilities are making in our community.”

Sauceda said he has performed with Rodriguez before when the young man graduated from Judson High School.
“It was his party so we pretty much let him do whatever he wanted to,” Sauceda said. “And he did just that. He sang and played my accordion that night alongside me.”
Cawthon said the Oct. 26 performance should prove powerful.
“Sunny and Steven will share the stage for one or two songs on Saturday, Oct. 26 celebrating and highlighting the performance strengths and abilities of individuals living with disabilities,” Cawthon said.

”Since I Fell For You,” written by Buddy Johnson Woodrow and produced by Abraham Quintanilla, is a beautiful ballad from the 16-year-old singer’s upcoming fourth album.
“It is a beautiful song that has such deep meaning,” Isabel Marie told Tejano Nation. “I feel what it must be like to be treated in such a selfish manner. It’s like reading a book that lets your imagination run wild. I close my eyes while singing the lyrics and my mind puts a movie together, which helps me put emotion into a song.”
“Since I Fell For Your” is available now at all major digital music platforms.

A beautiful monument honoring late Tejano icon Jimmy Gonzalez was unveiled at his gravesite on Saturday (Oct. 12.)
Fans, family and friends attended the ceremony at Buena Vista Burial Park in Brownsville, Texas, to reveal the black marble headstone, featuring a guitar on the right side. The front of the monument displays a picture of Gonzalez with his name, dates of birth and death and message, “Como quisiera que estuvieras aqui, para estar juntos una ves mas (How I wish you were here, to be together once more).”
The left side of the monument also displays a message, “A generous heart, a humble spirit, disciple of our Lord, and constant in faith – Music was his passion, a gift to the living, and an inspiration to us all.”
Gonzalez was a pioneer, a legend and a multiple Grammy Award winner that achieved international acclaim as co-founder of one of the most successful Tejano groups ever, Mazz. He died of cardiac arrest in June 2018 at the age of 67.
“Everyone in the Latin music industry – Tejano, Norteno, Regional Mexican industry – knew the name Jimmy Gonzalez, knew the impact he had made as an artist with Grupo Mazz as a producer, a writer, a guitar player, second to none,” said Freddie Martinez, Jr., Vice President of Operations and co-owner for Freddie Records. “He was the true musical mastermind of that band and that, there is no doubt.”
Gonzalez joined Freddie Records in 1999, recording many hit albums and songs, earning seven Latin Grammy Awards, six of them consecutively, and one Grammy Award.
“For nearly 20 years, Jimmy was a big part of the Freddie Records family and when I say family I truly mean family we don’t take that word lightly at Freddie Records,” added Martinez. “Jimmy was truly a part of the Freddie Records family.”
The monument was created by Tim Morris, also known as Cemetery Tim, who owns a headstone company in Toppenish, Washington, providing families with personalized headstones, tombstones, memorials, monuments and more. He created custom headstones for late rapper Eric “Eazy-E” Wright and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of hip-hop group TLC. He has also been commissioned to create a headstone for late Tejano singer Ernestine Romero, who was tragically killed in July.
“Over the last year, we’ve been working on this very special design for Jimmy,” said Morris. “It definitely represents who he was and I’m just very, very thankful to be a part of this and share this with the family.”

The track, written by Gerardo Alvarez and Miguel A. Lopez, is the latest single from Sarah Monique’s latest album, “Esta Noche Te Olvido,” released in 2018.
“This song meant so much to me, not only because one of my idols recorded with me, Shelly Lares, but because of the message that it brings and it helps women stay strong and positive throughout any situation that they encounter when they are in or out of a relationship,” Sarah Monique told Tejano Nation.
Lares is a major influence for Sarah Monique with a legendary career that spans 37 years, beginning when Lares was just a young girl. Sarah Monique reached out to “Little Miss Dynamite” to be a part of the song.
“When I heard it I thought it was fun and catchy and I really wanted someone as a strong voice as well,” Sarah Monique said. “Two women coming together and having that bond.”
