Becky G spoke about Selena in an interview with Hola! USA, “Selena Quintanilla, I think of the word ‘happy’. She always had a smile on her face. Very humble, hard worker, very family-oriented.”

Lucy Rodriguez awarded $29K in ‘Pediré’ copyright infringement suit

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A Federal Court in San Antonio, Texas, ordered the payment of $29,000 in damages and attorney’s fees, to Corpus Christi-based Tejano artist and Air Force veteran, Lucy Rodriguez, as a result of a copyright infringement lawsuit filed against music producer Eric Avalos, Avalos’ company Chavalos Music Inc. and Cortney Rico.

The claim involved the song “Pediré”, which Rodriguez widely released and promoted in 2015, under her Emerald Records label. The song was originally composed by Juan Villarreal and Rodriguez owns the rights to the song. The dispute originated in 2017, when Rico and Avalos recorded and commercially released “Pediré”, without permission.

In 2018, Rodriguez’s attorneys sent cease and desist letters demanding Rico and Avalos stop their infringement. Avalos removed the song from digital distribution and offered to pay all revenue generated, totaling $31.61, and further promised to discontinue any involvement with the song.

“Based on a public claim from Rico’s promoter of 2,000 purchases, we expected higher revenue, however, the sales report only showed 36 sales. To avoid further litigation, I agreed to the proposal,” Rodriguez said.

Despite Rodriguez’s attorneys reaching out to the defendants to formally close the matter, neither defendant followed through nor were the defendants done infringing on Rodriguez’s work.

In January of 2019, Rodriguez’s rights were again infringed when Cortney Rico, publicly performed “Pediré” at a music venue alongside Eric Avalos, created a video of the performance and distributed it on the internet.

“Creating and distributing a music video without obtaining a synchronization license from the owner, is another way to break Copyright Law,” Rodriguez explained.

The choice to move forward via the courts was as much about exercising the protection she has under the law, as to bring caution to fellow professional musicians.

“Had I not registered my work, this case would have taken much longer to resolve,” Rodriguez warns.

The US Western District Court ruled that the defendant’s actions were willful, allowing for damages, attorney’s fees and a permanent injunction banning defendants use of “Pediré.”  Copyright Law is complex and constantly updating (as recently exemplified by the Supreme Court’s Fourth Estate decision).  Ms. Rodriguez partnered with San Antonio intellectual property attorneys Brandon Cook and Mike Villarreal in achieving this victory.

Marisela Hernandez pays tribute to Laura Canales with the release of a medley featuring “Despacito” and “Pa’ Que Volver” from the late Tejano Queen.

“I wanted to be able to connect again to our Tejano roots and honor one of the greatest Pioneers in our genre,” Hernandez told Tejano Nation.

This medley was recorded at the Layton Studios in Elsa, Texas. Johnny Hernandez, Marisela’s husband, arranged and recorded the bass guitar and drums with George Ochoa on accordion and Felix Aleman on the bajo sexto.

“I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I do singing it,” exclaimed Hernandez.

Canales, “La Reina de la Onda Tejana,” was a pioneer and trendsetter during the early days of Tejano music recording many hit songs and albums. She died of complications following surgery at the age of 50 on April 16, 2005 in Corpus Christi, Texas.  She was the first massively popular female singer in the macho world of Tejano music, following the pioneering careers of Chelo Silva and Lydia Mendoza.

An event to celebrate a revitalized Selena mural in the neighborhood where the late Tejano icon lived received some legal drama on Saturday.

KIITV.com reports that just hours before the event was to take place, the Quintanilla family sent a cease and desist letter to the event organizer Eric Tunchez threatening a lawsuit over the event that looked to profit on Selena’s image.

The original mural was dedicated by West Oso High School students and art teacher Dicky Valdez shortly after Selena’s death in 1995, according to Caller.com. Tunchez wanted to revitalize the now fading mural and reached out to the Quantinalla family and received permission from Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. to redo the mural.

The Quintanilla family hired New York artist San Sigüenza do the work of updating the new mural and Abraham Quintanilla told Caller.com that Tunchez “didn’t pay one penny…and is taking credit for everything.”

Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, told 3News, “I just want people to know that we’re the ones who paid for the mural personally the Quintanilla family, not this foundation, we did we paid for it, and we didn’t give it to Mr. Tunchez to do whatever he chose to do, we gave it back to neighborhood.”

The letter states the family’s prior involvement with the revitalized Selena Quintanilla mural was “expressly contingent” with the understanding that Tunchez “would never, at any time, seek to exploit the mural for economic advantage and/or promote an event (either in connection with or unrelated to the mural) through the unauthorized and unlawful exploitation of the name, image, likeness and trademarks of Selena.”

“We have protected Selena’s legacy for the past 24 years, we take pride in making sure it is ran a certain way and we’re not associated with Mr. Tunchez, we’re not, and we want to make that very clear,” Suzette Quintanilla told 3News. “If we allow this then I don’t know what he’s going to be doing in the future and we’re just trying to protect Selena’s legacy.”

Tejano solo vocalist Raymond “Ray Ray” Garcia of Los Agues fame shares his unique rendition of the Juan Gabriel-penned classic, “Costumbres,” as the lead single from his third solo album aptly titled, “2020,” to be released in late 2020.

Garcia got the idea to redo the song, which was famously recorded by legend Rocio Durcal and covered by Tejano’s own queen, Selena, following a dream he had in which the song was playing before he took the stage.

“When I woke up, I remember the song had a really symphonic beginning and I wanted that for my version of ‘Costumbres’,” Garcia told Tejano Nation.  “I immediately called Hugo (Guerrero) to schedule a recording session.”

Ray Ray dedicates “Costumbres” as a tribute to Selena, who was his cousin, and he sings the classic with emotion, starting off with a slow intro that leads into a ranchera beat and features a rock-tinged flavor courtesy of the guitar performance by his brother, Jesse Garcia.

“I have always loved this song covered by Rocio Durcal and made famous in the Tejano industry by my prima,” Garcia said.  “It’s a tribute to her because she was such an inspiration to us all in this industry.  It’s an honor to have covered this romantic song that everyone loves.”

Fall in love with the song all over again. “Costumbres” was produced by Hugo Guerrero at Nightmare Audio Productions. The video was produced by Lupe Moya with LM Media Productions.

José pleads ‘Dame La Oportunidad’ for latest single from upcoming project [AUDIO]

Newcomer José has released his latest single, “Dame La Oportunidad,” a song written by Gerardo Alvarez.

José paid tribute to late Tejano icon Emilio Navaira with a cover of “Fijate Mama” earlier this year, now the singer and songwriter pours his heart out one verse at a time pleading “Dame La Oportunidad.”

“This song is a perfect example of not knowing what you got til it’s gone and the endless efforts to be forgiven,” José told Tejano Nation about his latest single.

In desperation to receive one more opportunity to mend his love’s broken heart, José realizes his selfishness throughout the relationship and vows to forever change his ways in hopes that she is willing to forgive and forget.

The song was penned by Alvarez, who has written hit songs from some of today’s biggest Tejano artists including Jay Perez (“Hasta El Fin Del Tiempo”), Elida Y Avante (“Suavecito”), Solido (“Contando Los Segundos”), the duet from Stevie D and Shelly Lares (“Me Muero Por Tu Amor”) and many more.

“Dame La Oportunidad” is available now at digital music platforms and will be a part of the upcoming sophomore album from José. He released his debut album “Serie De Eventos Desafortunados” in February 2017.

Dee Burleson of Culturas returns with Calle Seis cumbia collab ‘Dile, Dile’ [AUDIO]

Dee Burleson, half of the dynamic duo from one of Tejano music’s greatest showbands, Culturas, has returned with his distinctive voice as a featured artist on the upbeat “Dile, Dile,” a cumbia collaboration with Calle Seis.

Calle Seis is made up of seasoned, award-winning musicians from Austin, Texas, led by Grammy-winning musician William “Wild Bill” Perkins.

Burleson, now based in Denver, Colorado, gave Tejano Nation the inside scoop on his return and hinted at more music to come.

“Over the years, I’ve maintained great friendships with some very prominent and fun musicians so working with Calle Seis — and in particular (Grammy-winning producer) Hugo Guerrero and (songwriter) Juanita Chapa — I had a wonderful time recording this song,” Burleson wrote via e-mail. “As always, the fans are No. 1 and I hope this song will be one of their favorites.”

Burleson’s voice sounds like it hasn’t missed a beat since his days with Culturas and he conveys the rich, soulfulness and contagious enthusiasm in this cumbia that he did as a member of Tejano’s top showband of the 1990s.

“When I spoke of maintaining great friendships with Tejano musicians, I unexpectedly got a call from Roel Martinez who has just released his latest CD, ‘Soñador de Amor,’ asking me to sing on a song with him,” Burleson said.

Another request followed from Billy O’Rourke (David Lee Garza y Los Musicales) on the song, “Hey Baby, Que Paso?” — a remake of the Texas Tornados classic.

“Then, amazingly enough, I received an email asking if I’d be willing to do a duet with Marcus Daniels on a new song for his next CD,” Burleson said. “Of course, I had to! I’m just honored and humbled that two great artists wanted to collaborate with me on their music.”

Without revealing too much, Burleson added, “I had fun recording on both of their projects and Tejano fans will hear some new music very soon.”

“A lot of you don’t know, a lot of you may know I’m going to be taking over the drum seat with Masizzo,” Jimenez said in the video. “Superfan of the band since back in the day and just kind of figuring it out what it is I was gonna do, what was going to be next for me?”

When Jimenez announced his departure from Siggno in January, he said he wanted to jam with a few other bands and it turns out a jam session turned into a full-time gig.

“We started playing together it just gelled,” he said. “I can’t really explain it, it’s just one of those things…I don’t know if it’s just experience or what, it sounded like we’ve been playing together all along.”

“At the end of the day for me, more than anything I just want to play with a group of guys that enjoy what they do,” he added.

Masizzo returned with new music for the first time in three years with the release of a new single, “No Digas Que No,” in January featuring a new lead vocalist, Isaias Ramirez, the son of original member Albert Ramirez.

At the age of 5, Jimenez began playing drums professionally and by age 9 was performing, recording and touring with Grammy-winning artists Selena and Chris Perez. His career has spanned almost three decades including stints with Xelencia (6 years), Mitico (4 years), A.B Quintanilla III y Los Kumbia Kings/All-Starz (7 years), while also working with Chako, Vanilla Ice and other artists.
