The manager for Joe Lopez released a statement about the former Tejano singer 30 days after his release from prison.

On April 16, Sandra Vallejo posted a statement online that said, “We are blessed to have Joe home, however release was never our goal – exoneration has always been our mission and priority from day one! Joe is safe and ready to have private time with his immediate family only at this time. We ask that you respect the privacy of Joe and the Lopez family. Once Joe is ready to see the public, we will let you all know. Please allow him time recover for the last 11 years and 5 months!”

Lopez was released from prison on March 16. He had been in prison since November 20, 2006 after he was convicted of sexually assaulting his niece.  The victim’s father — Joe Lopez’s brother — signed a sworn affidavit saying his daughter’s outcry was false. To this day, Lopez claims he’s innocent.

“Please understand, per our legal team, we are not at liberty to discuss our exoneration process due to the integrity of this case,” Vallejo added. “Judicial updates will be posted on our website, www.JoeLopezMazz.com, periodically.”

The 67-year-old co-founder of Grammy winning group Mazz was sentenced to 32 years in prison in 2006. He was sentenced to 20 years for one count of aggravated sexual assault of a child, eight years for a second count of aggravated sexual assault of a child and four years for indecency with a child, since Lopez was serving his sentences simultaneously, he was ordered to serve 20 years in prison. He was granted parole in 2017.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Lopez’s release has several conditions: he will undergo supervised parole through Oct. 31, 2026; he must not have contact with his niece or enter Harris County, where she lives; and he will have to register as a sex offender.

The attorney for Eddie Gonzalez has released a statement on the singer’s arrest on Thursday night for non-payment of child support.

The 45-year-old singer was arrested by deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff’s office after a warrant for contempt of court was issued for his arrest by the office of the Texas attorney general.

“We are sending out this formal statement and comment on the arrest of Mr. Gonzales at approximately 9:30 p.m. last night from the Tejano Explosion event in San Antonio, Texas.

Mr. Gonzales is currently involved with the litigation relating to past due child support payments. Mr. Gonzales, for many years, was under the impression that his prior management company had been making payments for his royalties for his child support. Unfortunately, this did not occur and a very large arrearage has developed that is owed to his former wife and his former girlfriend.

Yesterday morning, we believed that we had an agreement for a payment arrangements with the Texas Attorney General’s office to begin to pay off the arrears and support. We also believe that as part of the negotiations that the warrants were lifted. Mr. Gonzales appeared at the Tejano Explosion believing that he had situation resolved.

After his arrest, a hearing was had this afternoon in which we successfully negotiated Mr. Gonzales’ release in return for a large child support payment. Mr. Gonzales wants his fans to know that he was not running from issue and was attempting to resolve this issue when his arrest occurred. He would further like to apologize to his fans and the promoters for what occurred last night and to let everyone know that he plans to make up for his cancellation.”

Gonzalez was scheduled to perform at Tejano Explosion in San Antonio on Thursday night.

His attorney said a $5,000 cash bond had been posted and that Gonzalez was in the process of being released.

KSAT.com reports that according to records from the Texas attorney general’s office, Gonzalez owes over $68,000 in back child support and medical support to two women.

A warrant was issued for Gonzalez in January, after he failed to show up for a court appearance in one of the cases, District Clerk records confirm.

Gonzalez’s attorney said in court Friday that his client was unaware of the warrant because a different person was served.

“Wasted Days and Wasted Nights: A Meteoric Rise to Stardom” written by Tammy Lorraine Huerta Fender tells the true-life story of her famous father, the late Baldemar Huerta, also known as Freddy Fender – The King of Tex-Mex. As only seen through the eyes of Freddy’s daughter, her book expresses in intimate detail his rise to success, heartbreaking fall and final redemption bringing to life the heartfelt memories of a man and family caught in the whirlwind of great fame, and conveys in a compassionate yet forthright manner the shattering addictions that accompanied this fame.

“Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” takes the reader on a journey which covers Freddy’s early life of brutal poverty as a child migrant worker, his years as a U.S. Marine, the shocking arrest and imprisonment of his early 20s, his barrier-breaking singing career as he exploded into and crossed over different music genres, and the alcohol and drug addiction from which he suffered.

During his last 21 years of sobriety, Freddy sought spiritual redemption, practiced forgiveness and made amends in his daily life; he came to lead by example with the aid of his higher power Jesus Christ. Freddy Fender was known to millions of people across the world as “an ordinary man who had extraordinary God-given talents.”

Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

About Freddy Fender:
Freddy was a Mexican-American singer who rose from the depths of poverty, breaking free from a life spent picking cotton and rising to a life spent picking guitar. In his youth, in 1956, he was the first to record and sing Spanish rock and roll; he was known as the “Mexican Elvis” and called “El Bebop Kid.” In the mid-1970s, Fender would become famous literally overnight as a rock ‘n’ country megastar with his first two monster hits “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights.”

Instantaneously, his records crossed over the Billboard country charts into the rock and pop charts, each rising to No. 1. He was given a Country Music Association award for “Single of the Year” and an Academy of Country Music award as “Most Promising Male Artist” in 1975. His voice and charismatic personality also made him a nationwide television celebrity in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

About the Tammy Lorraine Huerta Fender:
Tammy Lorraine Huerta Fender has divided her father’s autobiography into two books. The first book explores Freddy’s struggles as he achieves the great American dream. The sequel delves into the darkness of the addictions that ravaged his and his family’s lives, forcing Freddy to the realization that he needed a divine intervention. The story of Freddy’s ultimate healing and hard-won sobriety is a searing story of faith and redemption. Tammy states that in writing a frank, realistic book that tells the true story of her father’s life, she is honoring her father’s last wish; Freddy wanted an authentic, uncompromising book to be written about his life. And readers will see that his daughter Tammy has done just that, conveying in honest prose the tale of a child migrant worker with a passion for music who picked cotton, a three-string guitar and achieved the great American Dream.

Musician Mario Vigil was released from Gary Hobbs’ band on April 21, just months after Vigil was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

Vigil’s wife, singer Nikki Lopez, posted on social media that her husband had been “fired” by Gary Hobbs after spending 13 years, off and on, as the keyboardist and accordionist for the Usual Suspects, Gary Hobbs’ band.

“Gary Hobbs has fired Mario Vigil today 4/21/18 after Mario purchased a plane ticket on Wednesday for a performance with Gary in Florida next weekend,” Lopez posted on her Facebook page. “This could not have come at a worse time giving that Mario is fighting stage 4 colon cancer and now cannot get a full refund for a plane ticket and is now left fighting for his life, jobless.”

Lopez added that Vigil was told specifically by Hobbs’ son Gary Lee that, “Gary is frustrated with the fact that he cannot be strict with Mario due to his cancer diagnosis.” She also said, “Mario was told by Jon McGraw (musical director of the band) that Mario is currently suspended for two weeks, but also stated they were thinking about bringing Mario back in May.”

Lopez says Vigil has never missed a show, or a sound check, even though he has had chemotherapy treatments twice every two weeks. He even missed his own iron infusion appointment to make a sound check for the band.

Gary Hobbs and the Usual Suspects | Courtesy photo

According to a now deleted comment by Gary Hobbs, this all began when Lopez sent a text to another wife of a band member that she was upset Vigil was expected to fly to Florida for shows next week in between chemotherapy treatments and threatened to have her husband quit the band if he were made to make the trip to Florida.

Tejano Nation reached out to Hobbs for a statement on Vigil’s release, but have yet to receive a reply.

In a phone conversation with Lopez, she told Tejano Nation that Vigil already has interest from other bands and will continue to work on his health over the next few months.

Michael Salgado and his wife, Blanca Mendez de Salgado, welcomed a baby girl on Tuesday night.  Alessandra Salgado was born at 7:00 p.m. on April 24 in San Antonio, Texas. She weighed 7 lbs., 13 oz., and was 21 inches long.

Alessandra is the first child for Blanca and fourth for Michael, who already has two sons and a daughter.

According to a statement from the singer’s record company, Zurdo Records, the whole pregnancy was very natural and without problems, but to make sure that Salgado and his wife could be present, they decided to induce labor and not leave it to nature and risk losing that great moment.

Salgado will have a few days at home with the family since he is scheduled to work in San Antonio, where he lives.

The two-time Latin Grammy winner plans to release a new album soon titled La Vida En Un Hilo.

“The title of the album is due to the delicate situation I had a few months ago,” said Salgado. “But, it will also contain songs that reflect these moments that my wife and I are living with the arrival of Alessandra.”

The 47-year-old singer suffered a stroke during a performance in Austin back in February. Salgado had a medical procedure after the stroke and is doing well.
