Proposal underway to rename street for Little Joe in his hometown

A proposal to rename a street in honor of music legend Little Joe Hernandez in his hometown of Temple, Texas, was presented to the city council on May 4.

Little Joe Y La Familia have entertained audiences around the world for more than 50 years and revolutionized Chicano and Tejano music as the “King Of The Brown Sound”, winning multiple Grammy awards.

The Temple chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is proposing the city rename a street to commemorate the accomplishments of the Tejano music Hall Of Famer.

Brian Chandler, director of planning, believes the most appropriate option would be to rename Sixth Street, as it would intersect the proposed MLK Festival Grounds.

“First of all, Sixth would bisect the festival grounds, so it’s certainly very appropriate with all the music that will be hosted in that festival grounds to have that street named after Little Joe,” Chandler said. “Also, there are no buildings along that section that would be affected.”

Mayor Danny Dunn said many Temple residents may not realize the impact Little Joe had in the music industry.

“What a lot of people in Temple don’t know is that Little Joe started orchestral Tejano music and basically did what Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly did for rock and roll,” Dunn said. “He is revered around the state and around the world. The fact that we don’t realize that certainly makes this something we need to do to honor this family and the contributions he’s made in the world of music.”

The street would officially remain Sixth Street, but stacked street signs would recognize Little Joe. Interim City Manager Brynn Myers said the proposal would have a minimal impact on residents.

“I think staff’s proposal balances the desire to honor Little Joe and also the desire to limit the impact on property owners,” Myers said. “Most of the property affected is actually city-owned property. There is a little bit that’s not, but it’s vacant.”

The Temple City Council will vote to adopt the renaming at a later date.

Little Joe Y La Familia recently recorded a live concert album in El Paso and released their latest studio album, San Antonio, in January and it’s available online at LittleJoeYLaFamilia.com.

Megan Chapa confronts the topic of domestic violence for her latest music video “Para La Otra,” released on Monday (May 15).

The powerful visual, filmed and edited by Jerod Johnson, features an abusive relationship and how one moment can change a life forever, or in this case, one phone call.

Chapa and her label, Mazmorra Records, weren’t sure if they were going to release the “Para La Otra” music video.

“It’s a really strong song and the video portrays a really dark issue that a lot of relationships go through and that’s why we were kind of undecided if we were going to put the video out or not,” Chapa said in a video posted on her Facebook page. “We don’t want to offend anybody, especially people going through this type of relationship…But we feel it’s something that goes on every day, it’s real, it happens all the time….We want to put it out there that it’s not okay and it’s okay to walk away from a bad relationship.”

The song is the latest released from the singer’s sophomore album Sueños Inquebrantables and was written by Wences Romo

“This song touches my heart in a very personal way and I am hoping to reach out to as many people possible to know there is always help and a way out of a bad situation,” Chapa posted on Facebook about the video.
