toptejanoalbums2016

The 10 best Tejano albums of 2016 come from newcomers, major headliners and veterans proving that their music and artistry is as strong as ever. There are very few skip-ahead tracks on this list of great albums. These are the men and women who appreciate an album as a piece of art, not just a collection of songs.

See if any of your favorites made our list of the year’s top albums, and share your opinion on the best of the year in the comments section below.

Only albums released in 2016 are eligible. Staff opinion, reader input, sales figures and critical acclaim are all taken into account when deciding this list.

#10 Mi Año Dorado – Veronique & The Puro Party Band

veronique-mianodoradocoverVeronique released Mi Año Dorado in June and the sophomore album from 2014 Tejano Music Awards nominee for Best New Female contains a little bit of everything from the smooth cumbia “Te Entrego Mi Corazón” to the boot-stomping rancherita “La Pulga.” Her unique style, along with strong vocals, gives us one of our favorite albums of 2016.

#9 M4 – Masizzo

#4 New Girl In Town – Isabel Marie

Heartfelt tribute by Savannah Votion and Rick Fuentes in ‘Cuando Se Fue’ video

What best describes Savannah Votion? Strong, soulful, and inspiring.

Beginning at the age of 8 with her uncle’s band, Rick Martinez,  Savannah grew up loving Mariachi music and Conjunto, learning the art of mastering and mixing sound arrangements.

In 2013, came an opportunity to shine. Savannah was a contestant on American Idol. I asked Savannah about her experience on the reality TV competition show.

“It was the highlight of my career,” Votion said.

Her judges included rapper Nicki Minaj, songwriter and producer Randy Jackson, singer Mariah Carey and country singer Keith Urban.

“You have life in your voice,” Urban said of Votion’s audition. “I can hear a lot of life, lots of struggles, highs, lows and triumphs. I can hear all of it. There is a lot of empowerment in your voice.”

Each judge had so many positive responses to Votion’s performance. The singer received the Gold Ticket, sending her to Hollywood.

The struggles have come again for Votion. In October 2016, her mom Irasema Votion, was diagnosed with cancer. Many days were spent at the hospital, many social media posts about Savannah’s pain were followed by her fans.

One of Savannah’s idols is “La Reina de Accordion”, Chavela Ortiz from Chavela y Su Grupo Express. Irasema Votion asked Savannah to put her idol’s song “Cuando Se Fue” on her album, which at first Savannah was reluctant. Finally accepting her mother’s wish, Votion recorded a remake of the song with producer Rick Fuentes.

The song is heartfelt and relates to all of us who have lost a loved one.

Music brings people together as Rick Fuentes’ father, Richard Fuentes, was a musician in the Brown Express. His father tragically passed away in 1983. Savannah told Tejano Nation that she and Fuentes cried together and gave each other strength during the shooting of the video. The singer added how she misses her mother, but she knows that her mother is proud of her success and proud of her single “Cuando Se Fue”.

Votion’s upcoming album, Diva Del Fuego, will be dedicated to her mother.

A Facebook Live video of Tejano legend Tony Guerrero getting his eyebrows waxed has gone viral. The visual of the frontman for La Sombra getting “manscaped” was filmed last summer, but the video has resurfaced on social media this week.

Could a joint concert with Jennifer Peña and her husband Obie Bermúdez be in the works? According to a Facebook post by Bermúdez, that could be a real possibility.

The Puerto Rican singer, who released his first album in more than 10 years in 2016, hinted via his official Facebook page on Tuesday (Jan. 3) that the couple could team up for a show.

Peña has also been away from music for almost 10 years as well. In a 2011 video testimony with Corpus Christi-based Church Unlimited, the singer said she took a break from music to focus on family, but when she tried to make a comeback the “circumstances weren’t working in my favor”, which led to her being “very, very angry with music.” She eventually turned to Christian music and singing in the church.¹

The couple, who married in 2007 and had a son the same year, most recently performed together in 2015 for “Unity: The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson,” which aired on PBS. The pair sang “Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu”, a Spanish version of Jackson’s “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.”

Could there be another performance for the couple in the near future? We’ll have to wait and see, but hopefully not too long.

La Peligrosa pays tribute to La Sombra with “Windy City Medley” [AUDIO]

lapeligrosa-windycitymedley

Singer and radio personality La Peligrosa has released her latest single, “Windy City Medley,” a dynamic, lively ranchera that is a tribute to legendary Tejano band La Sombra.

The medley features two songs originally recorded by La Sombra, “Regresa” and “Pensando En Ti.”

“I was 8 years old when I saw La Sombra perform live in Chicago, Illinois,” La Peligrosa told Tejano Nation. “This was the first concert I had ever seen. My grandfather purchased the record for me that day. Their energetic performance left a lasting impression. In retrospect, it set the tone for my love and passion for Tejano music.”

The idea for the recording arose when La Peligrosa was making a mix of songs for her radio show.

“I shared the idea with my producer Rolando Revilla,” she said. “Rolando brought the idea to life and added the Midwest flare! It’s one of my favorite recordings to date. It is my hope that Tejano Music lovers will love it too!”

The track is included on the singer’s debut album Hoy, released in December 2015.  The album earned La Peligrosa a Tejano Music Award nomination for Best New Female Artist in 2016.

Originally from Chicago and also known as The Windy City Boys, La Sombra has released over twenty full-length studio albums featuring songs in both Spanish and English since 1984. The band has been credited with influencing the Tejano and cumbia music industry with their musical style, dress, and concert performances, as well as inspiring a generation of newer artists including the Kumbia Kings.

Marcus Daniels and Aisha have released their duet, “Siempre,” a Spanish remake of the 1987 hit “Always” from Atlantic Starr.

The duo’s collaboration was produced by Sotero Soniceros and was the idea of one of the duo’s huge supporters.

“We had spoke about singing together in the past, a Prince song because of an idea that was brought up by one of our huge supporters from an internet radio station,” Aisha told Tejano Nation. “Since we both loved music from the 80’s, I suggested we do a remake of the song ‘Always’ by Atlantic Starr and translate it to Spanish. Marcus’ producer loved the idea and the rest was history.”

The project brought together two of Tejano music’s rising singers.

“Definitely excited how this project came together, it was a pleasure working with Aisha,” Daniels told Tejano Nation. “If fans like this one they are going to love the full sophomore CD.”

“Siempre” is available for download now at TexSoundPublishing.com and will be included on Daniels’ upcoming sophomore album scheduled for release this fall.
