About Conjunto Music

Conjunto music is Texas “roots” music that dates back to the end of the 19th century. Like Blues and Traditional Country, it tells the stories of the everyday lives of the working class. It is also dance music, characterized by a strong, unrelenting beat and bright accordion melodies, evidence of the fusion of German and Mexican immigrant cultures in south Texas at the beginning of the 20th century. It was tremendously popular among working-class Hispanic Texans during the post-World War II era, before audiences began to flock to Tejano music, which was a heavily influenced by Orquesta, Rock, Rhythm   and Blues, Jazz, and Country, beginning in the late 1960s and 1970s, nearly wiping out Conjunto on radio playlists everywhere.

In recent years, Conjunto has enjoyed a surge in popularity, thanks to the internet, the rise of younger groups, and new festivals in cities all over Texas and the rest of the country. It remains, however, a hidden gem in the history of American music and continues to fight for air time on the few remaining terrestrial Tejano music radio stations in Texas.

About the Eligio Escobar Scholarship Fund

The Eligio Escobar Scholarship Fund was established by Linda Escobar to recognize the talents of young Conjunto musicians and awards scholarships annually to help them continue their education.

To date, the Fund has awarded over 50 scholarships to children from all over the state.

More information about Linda Escobar is available online at lindaescobar.com. If you would like to schedule an interview, please call 361-442-3962 or 361-726-9212, or email lindaescobar@live.com.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday that Univision San Antonio’s radio station KXTN-FM 107.5 Tejano and Proud will serve as the franchise’s new official Spanish-language radio station. As part of the partnership, Univision San Antonio has the rights to broadcast all Spurs games on KXTN, starting with the team’s 2016-17 NBA season opener on Oct. 25 against the Golden State Warriors at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

“Nothing says San Antonio better than your San Antonio Spurs and Univision’s KXTN 107.5 Tejano and Proud,” said Chris Morris, Vice President and General Manager for Univision Local Media, Inc. San Antonio. “These brands resonate within our community and are puro San Antonio. Our partnership with the Spurs will give our listeners access to the games and the team we know they love.”

Play-by-play broadcaster Paul Castro will continue to serve as the Spanish voice of the Spurs. Now in his 24th season with the Silver and Black, Castro has called seven NBA Finals series, including all six Spurs Finals appearances.

“We’re dedicated to providing our fans with the best experience and KXTN is the perfect partner to help deliver premium content to Spurs fans,” said Mike Kickirillo, Senior Director of Broadcasting for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “Our partnership with KXTN will allow us to extend the reach of our Spanish radio broadcasts and better serve our passionate fans.”

juantrevino-siempreesasiJuan Treviño, one of the top songwriters in La Onda Tejana, has released a new single “Siempre Es Asi,” featuring AJ Castillo on the accordion.

Treviño has composed some of the biggest songs in Tejano music for over 10 years. He has written hit songs for Los Palominos (Me Enamore De Un Angel), La Mafia (Amor Y Sexo), Vizzio (Para Demostrarte), Siggno (Te Acostumbraste A Estar Sin Mi), Grupo Solido (Soy Libre), David Lee Garza y Los Musicales (El Privilegio) Jay Perez (Un Amigo Tendras), Elida Reyna Y Avante and Solido (Atrevete Amarme), to name just a few.

The singer-songwriter showcases his smooth vocals and distinct songwriting in his first single as an artist. “Siempre Es Asi” is a romántic cumbia showcasing his vocal and musical ability (performing bajo sexto and electronic bass) and features accordion virtuoso, AJ Castillo lending his power-house and distinct accordion riffs in the track.

“I wrote it after coming back from vacation in Cabo with my wife,” Treviño told Tejano Nation. “When we were on vacation she would get ready every morning and I would drink coffee and just have conversations, you know. So the song was born from that getaway. That song set the tone for the whole album.”

The song is the lead single from Trevino’s upcoming album Fragmentos, which includes brand new compositions and featured guest artists on various tracks including La Mafia, David Lee Garza, Grupo Solido, AJ Castillo, and many more.

“Siempre Es Asi” is now available on all major digital platforms.

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame on Friday in Denton, Texas.  The late Tejano music legend was one of five Texas women inducted by Texas Governor Greg Abbott at the ceremony hosted by Texas Woman’s University.

“So honored today to induct Selena into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame,” Gov. Abbot said. “Very well deserved for the way she transformed music in the state of Texas and across the world. She is an icon in Texas music.”

Selena was inducted alongside four other women recognized for their accomplishments in business, aviation, education and public service.

“Selena shattered stereotypes and expectations, proving the impossible is always possible,” Gov. Abbot said during the ceremony.

Suzette Quintanilla-Arriaga, Selena’s sister, accepted the honor for the Queen of Tejano music.

“I feel very proud in knowing there’s a new generation who has embraced and looked up to her as a role model,”  she said.  “I know my sister would be ecstatic to be accepting this gracious award that’s so empowering for women. Thank you so much, in honor of the Queen of Cumbia, Selena.”

The induction comes 21 years after Selena was murdered by her fan club president in March 1995.

This past year, a wax figure of Selena was unveiled at Madame Tussaud’s in Hollywood and MAC Cosmetics launched a Selena collection that sold out almost immediately.

dakrazypimpz-inspiration_500x500Da Krazy Pimpz have released their latest single, “You’re The Inspiration,” a remake of the 1984 hit from rock band Chicago.  This is the first song recorded in English by Da Krazy Pimpz, who also released a Spanish version of the song, “Tu Eres La Inspiracion.”

“It was one of my favorite songs growing up from the ’80’s soft rock band Chicago,” Da Krazy Pimpz lead vocalist Eddie Jimenez told Tejano Nation. “A very nice song that we couldn’t resist to remake and see how it sounded. We also transposed the lyrics and did the Spanish version, which had great response so far in our Mexicano/Tejano fans’ hearts.”

This is the latest single from the band’s eighth album Historia De Mi Vida, released in March 2016 from Bordertown Records and is available now from all digital retailers.

“‘You’re The Inspiration’ was a very different animal in recording it, through its complicated chord progressions, it’s definitely one of our toughest projects yet,” Jimenez added. “We thank all our fans for the love and support on this great CD as well as this year 2016.”

Da Krazy Pimpz are currently working on their new album, expected to be released in early 2017 with surprise special guests. Learn more about the Da Krazy Pimpz at their offical website DaKrazyPimpz.com.

Latina magazine announced on Tuesday that Selena Quintanilla-Perez has been chosen as the cover star for the magazine’s 20th anniversary issue in November.

“Her influence transcends age, ethnicity, and class. And, more important, she was all ours,” Latina editorial director Robyn Moreno wrote on the publication’s website.

The late singer was considered the Queen of Tejano music, a male-dominated music genre few believed the young singer would conquer.

“Selena stands out as one of the most beloved Latinas of our generation — that’s why she’s the cover image for Latina’s 20th anniversary — transcending age and background to be revered by millennials, old folks, and celebs alike,” Moreno continued about the magazine’s latest cover star.

In 2016, 21 years after her death, Selena is still making headlines. In August, the singer was immortalized in a wax statue at Madame Tussaud’s Museum in Hollywood. In September, M⋅A⋅C Cosmetics also released a Selena makeup collection, their biggest product launch in the company’s history, that sold out in it’s first day of sales, both online and in stores.  Selena was also inducted into Texas Women’s Hall of Fame on October 21.

Selena was killed by her fan club president in March 1995.

Read more about Selena as the cover star for the November issue, as well as a look back at the most influential covers in Latina history at the magazine’s official website, Latina.com.

“When I say ‘I get inspiration from the smallest things,’ I literally mean it,” Garcia posted on her YouTube channel. “Beyond excited to be channeling my inner lipstick this Halloween, but not just any lipstick, the Selena x Mac ‘Como La Flor’ lippie to be exact.”

Garcia originally wanted to put out a tutorial costume as a regular lipstick, but after seeing how gorgeous the packaging was on the Selena x MAC Cosmetics collaboration campaign, the DIY blogger knew she had to mix the two concepts together.

“Overall the tutorial is very inexpensive, easy to create, and can be customized to your liking,” she added. “You can take the template of the overall costume and re-work it to assemble your favorite lipstick shade/brand too or wear the lipstick hat with a simple black elegant dress and really let your makeup guru vibe shine through.”

The Selena makeup collection was the biggest product launch in MAC Cosmetics history selling out immediately across the country after it’s release in early October.

Tejano music legend Salomé Gutierrez passed away on Thursday (October 27).

The composer and founder of Del Bravo Record Shop in San Antonio was surrounded by his family when he died, according to Del Bravo Record Shop’s Facebook page.

“Today our father Salome Gutierrez R., Composer-Record Producer, founder of San Antonio Music Publishers, Del Bravo Record Shop & DLB Record Label passed away at home surrounded by his family.”

Gutierrez composed hundreds of songs and many were recorded by Tejano and Conjunto music legends. Flaco Jimenez, Valerio Longoria, and the “First Lady of Tejano” Lydia Mendoza were just a few that worked with Gutierrez. He started composing music at the age of 14.  In 1946, his first composed song “Corazon Aqui Te Quedas,” which was recorded by a music group.

San Antonio Music Publishers is one of the largest independent Latin catalogs and the largest publisher of Tejano music.
