Late Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla will be honored with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood, the museum announced on Monday.

In commemoration of the 21st anniversary of the Tejano superstar’s fifth and final studio album, Dreaming of You, Madame Tussauds Hollywood today announces that it will immortalize Selena in wax and releases a special sneak preview of the forthcoming wax figure honoring her. The official unveiling of Selena’s figure will take place during a rooftop celebration at Madame Tussauds Hollywood on August 30th. Click here to find out how to win a VIP access to the launch party and more.

“At Madame Tussauds, our figures represent icons who have made a significant impact on our culture,” said Colin Thomas, General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hollywood. “That perfectly describes Selena. Her influence has transcended generations and her passionate fans continue to be inspired by her to this day.  We recognize this and in response, we are proud to join her fans in celebrating her legacy by immortalizing her.”

In response to an outpouring of fan appreciation, Madame Tussauds Hollywood stepped forward to immortalize the beloved singer-songwriter in wax, working with a team of expert sculptors and artists to meticulously research and capture Selena’s authentic likeness. After traveling to The Selena Museum in Corpus Christi, TX for an initial meeting, Madame Tussauds worked in partnership with the Quintanilla family through every step of the process to create the wax figure—from selecting Selena’s iconic pose and expression, to choosing her signature hairstyle, makeup and wardrobe.

“On behalf of our family we would like to express a huge amount of gratitude to Madame Tussauds in creating such an amazing lifelike wax figure of our beloved Selena. This is yet another step in making sure that her legacy lives on and that her fans new and old can appreciate her as a person, an artist and one whom we can all identify with,” said Suzette Arriaga, Selena’s sister.

The figure, valued at approximately $350,000, will be dressed in a recreated stage look from Selena’s concert held at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, TX on Feb 7, 1993. The figure’s look celebrates her concert performance recorded for the album Selena Live!, which won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Album in 1994.

On June 29, Selena’s family announced she will be commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame more than 22 years after her death.

Quintanilla was the top Tejana and Latina artist in both the U.S. and Mexico before her tragic murder in 1995. She was 23.

Tex-Mex band The Last Bandoleros performed “Where Do You Go?” on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday (July 18).

“Where Do You Go?” is the lead single from the San Antonio-based band’s debut EP.  The Tex-Mex/Pop-Rock band features Diego Navaira (bass and vocals), Jerry Fuentes (guitar and vocals) and Derek James (guitar and vocals). Navaira is the son of the late Tejano and Country musician Emilio Navaira.

According the band’s website, TheLastBandoleros.com, the band is a new breed of Tex-Mex, “meshing 1 part Tex-Mex, 1 part Brit-Pop and 2 parts Country/Rock, to write and perform driving songs brimming with melody informed by a unique amalgam of influences that only young Americans growing up a stone’s throw away from the Rio Grande might have absorbed.”

micorazonestuycoverart_500x500AJ Castillo released his latest single, “Mi Corazón Es Tuyo,” on Tuesday (July 26).

The hot new summer track was written by Castillo along with Miguel Spindola.  Spindola is the songwriter behind the hits “Linda Chaparrita” and “Si Lo Quieres” for La Diferenzia.

“I love the vibe, it’s a Caribbean type beach vibe,” Castillo told Tejano Nation. “I came up with the idea one day when I came across a novela called Mi corazón es tuyo and I thought that would be a cool tune, so then I started getting work and out came this song. It’s different than the songs I’ve recorded in the past. This has more of an international appeal and hope listeners enjoy the versatility.”

The beat was constructed by Castillo, with special guest musicians Mario Ortiz on keyboards and Gabriel Zavala on bass. Zavala also mixed and mastered the track.

Festival Band…Live Music Without Borders

12698680_210081346013212_189208708595769567_oThe motto: Live music without borders, is just what this band lives by. Festival Band is unique whereas they bring Tejano, Old School, R&B, and Top 40 to your dancing shoes. Festival’s objective is to play all genres of music to keep you dancing all night.

Festival was originally put together by Jesse Ortiz in 1981, however in 2002 the original band broke up. In June 2009, Festival was re-established by Danny Sanchez, his brother Eddie Sanchez and Rick Hernandez. Sanchez’s expectations for the band was to add some Funk, R&B, Old School and to just be a garage playing band. Skeptical band members joked about a Tejano Band playing Hip Hop. An obstacle Festival faced, was to find a singer who has the vocals to sing the variety of music. The first lead vocalist was Robert Grijalva who showed his versatility and sang for a few gigs. Then Aldaberto Gallegos III sang for a few months but had to leave the band for personal reasons. Still in pursuit for a vocalist, Bobby Valenzuela sang for a few years but left to pursue other interests. Finally, Grijalva returned to Festival and became the official lead singer. Three years passed by and in January 2016, Grijalva left to Texas to pursue his dreams. Following in the New Tejano Sound such as David Lee Garza, and Jay Perez along came the talented vocalist Abelino Sanchez and filled the void.

I presented a question to Hernandez, “What do you want your fans to leave with after seeing your performances.” He smiled and said, “Hearing someone say to me, I really had a good time dancing to your music.” Per Hernandez, that is the most gratifying and no better compliment. The musician stated he speaks for the whole band when playing the music, takes them and the listeners away from problems, it’s a get away from work, from all the bad in the World and its a way of expressing ourselves.

Members of the Festival Band include, Eddie Sanchez,( Danny’s brother )  who is the drummer and one of the founders of Festival. Scott Anderson plays the trumpet/ trombone/ keyboards and is a music teacher for the Sunnyside School district. Mike Suarez brought his stylish guitar skills. Mark Brugler added the bass, to add to the horn section is Joe Chavez, lead Trumpet Player. Danny Sanchez, who played keyboards but tragically passed away in April 2016 and now helping to fill in is John Sanchez (Abelino’s Father). Rick Hernandez on the saxophone and founder of Festival, as well. Last but not least Estella Hernandez booking agent, photographer, and Ricks wife.

What was emphasized by Rick Hernandez is that because of the brotherhood of all musicians they represent all the local bands in Arizona. Festival is humbled by all the support given to them by the fans, many supportive sponsors, and all the Radio DJ’s.

The most challenging part for the band is figuring out what the people want to dance to, what is the right mix of music so that the people enjoy themselves. The fans enjoy a particular signature song from Festival, it is the song “This Is How We Do It” from R&B crooner Montel Jordan, it’s always requested and expected to be played. As Robert Grijalva added , ” Festival does it like no body does.”

13237674_1605102079803238_2465164006523320628_nThis year, the band suffered a heartbreak. The founder of Festival, Danny Sanchez passed away in April 2016. Danny’s dream was to make the Gran Baile in Vegas. He also expressed his goals, plus complete a CD. Reflecting on the many hours of practice, bonding together so that thru friendship and closeness, the music will be projected out to everyone who attends their gigs. Danny’s dreams are coming true as Festival is honored by Shelly Lares, David and Sarah Chavez to play at the Gran Baile on Saturday August 6th. Expect Festival to display their own original music but also to show their musicianship plus enhance the lead vocals by having Robert Grijalva and Abelino Sanchez to sing together. Original songs written by Joe Chavez, Rick Hernandez and a song in tribute to Danny Sanchez called Brohito written by Robert, Abelino and John will be show cased.

Excitement is building, anticipation is growing. Per Rick, this performance is for you all, the fans, the bands here in Arizona, all the wives and significant others of the Festival Band who have supported and loved us. Rick said,” The Gran Baile is for everyone who believed in us and for Danny Sanchez. Arizona is excited and proud of this accomplishment that Festival has reached and we all believe they have an Angel watching over them. Arizona is proud of you all, Festival!!

You can find Festival on Facebook at The Festival Band and also their website at TheFestivalBand.com.

Album Review: Veronique’s ‘Mi Año Dorado’ has a little bit of everything

veronique-mianodoradocoverSome say that the Tejano music genre is in a struggle; others say it’s on an upswing.

While our mainstays, like David Lee Garza, Jay Perez, Elida Reyna and others keep at it, as fans, we need to seek out new talent for our hungry ears. AMI Records artist Veronique offers the sort of vocal talent that can just as easily join that group of mainstay artists to keep Tejano strong.

A few years after her debut album Encantadora, she has released her sophomore production, Mi Año Dorado, and, I must tell you, it’s an album that is exactly what we fans look for–de todo un poco. The RGV native and graduate of UT-Pan Am delivers on all kinds of tunes, including rancheras, cumbias, boleros, and mariachi-styled numbers.

Kicking off with a smooth Tejano cumbia, “Te Entrego Mi Corazon,” she leaves no doubt about how enjoyable the album will be. “El Mas Grande de Mis Errores” is one of those female empowerment tunes, acknowledging the mistake that a certain man is in one nice little tell-off–all in a rancherita to which one can zapatear. As real as that song is, “La Pulga,” another boot-stomping rancherita about having a date at a flea market, is as real as it gets. The more Norteña “Su Mujer” is just as danceable, with Veronique offering up some vocal range throughout the tune.

Cumbias are also the order of the day including a modern-styled “Regresa A Mi,” but it is “Primer Amor which takes folks back to the sock-hop days with a 50s-esque intro and do-wop style. “Fantasia,” though, brings it back to the modern style and “Vinyl Viernes takes us on a more tropical trip that includes some heavy percussion. Not lost, though, is Veronique’s full-voiced delivery.

Vete de Aqui and “Blanco y Negro provide some acordeon-heavy boleros that show off Veronique’s range and abilities. But it’s the album-closer that will definitely be a fan favorite at live shows as the Mariachi-styled “Sobrevivire will cause some mujer-led, grito-filled sing-a-longs.

Veronique Medrano’s career is definitely on the upswing as she has opened for major acts all over the state of Texas. Nominated for the Tejano Music Awards “Best New Female Artist” category, she is definitely being noticed. Down in El Magico Valle, she is also a co-host with Mando San Roman on Puro Tejano TV. She’s about to embark on a Texas tour, which begins in Baytown on August 13. So, keep an eye out for her upcoming events on her website.

Thanks to John Henry Medina from Tejano Nation for putting Veronique on my radar. One can download Mi Año Dorado at CDBaby or buy the CD at Veronique’s website.

Siggno remained on top of Billboard magazine’s Top Latin and Regional Mexican album charts for a second consecutive week.

The band’s latest album, Yo Te Esperaré, was the top selling album two weeks in a row since its release on July 15, according to SoundScan.

“For us it is a blessing to get to liking of people, without our fans we are nothing and thanks to them this record has giving us many surprises,” said Siggno frontman Jesse Turner.

Three singles from the chart-topping album are already on top of radio playlists across the country, including “El Perdon,” “Yo Te Esperaré” and the latest release, “Yo Te Amaba desde Antes” a duet with Lalo Ayala from Latente .

Siggno will embark on a tour with Los Tigres del Norte in California from August 3rd to the 7th, including Los Angeles, Fresno and Visalia.

Roy Garcia raises funds for school supplies to help children in need

roygarciaRoy Garcia exceeded his goal to raise funds for school supplies for families in need this summer. The singer, a former educator, raised over $300 using a GoFundMe page to aid Tejano radio stations’ school supply drives, including Tejano Nation affiliates La Voz 93.3 in Abilene and KSAB-FM in Corpus Christi.

“Having previously worked in education for six years, I often saw children come to school on the first day without school supplies, back packs and sometimes even without new clothes/uniforms,” Garcia told TejanoNation. “Let’s face it, when you’re a family living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to put food on the table, school supplies just seem so far outside the budget and not at the top of the priority list. It was truly heart breaking to see some kids have to do without, while others flourished with the necessities needed to succeed in school.”

Statistics show that more than one-third of low-income students begin kindergarten not ready for school and this creates a long lasting trickle down effect in their learning capabilities throughout grade school. By the time they reach fourth grade, 50 percent will not be at grade level in reading, all because they weren’t prepared for school with the tools they needed to effectively learn.

“It got me thinking about just how many families might be out there this year who do not have the money to adequately provide their children with the proper school supplies that they need to thrive and learn,” Garcia said. “I decided that I wanted to do something this year to help out anyway I could. So, I created a GoFund me account and set a goal for $300. I asked family, friends and supporters to donate whatever they could. Whether it was $1.00 or $10.00, every single cent made a difference.”

In less than two short days Garcia was able to reach his goal.

“100% of the proceeds will go to the purchase of school supply items that I will in return be sending to radio stations that I have partnered with that are holding school supply collection initiatives of their own,” Garcia added. “This was just something I decided to do at the spur of the moment, but seeing how so many people were eager to contribute, I hope to do this next year as well and on a slightly larger scale to help more communities throughout Texas.”

Although Garcia won’t be able to reach every child this year, making sure children have the tools they need to enrich their learning experience all while fostering a conducive learning environment is a great investment in the future of our children and communities.

There are several resources to look to for school supplies. The American Red Cross usually holds school supply drives at their local chapters. The Salvation Army is also partnered with Target and Walmart for back to school initiatives. You can also check local community centers and churches that hold annual back to school drives, as well as your local school districts. Also, reach out to your local city district representatives for neighborhood school drive initiatives. Be sure to listen to your favorite Tejano radio station as they will be giving out information about back to school drives.

Garcia’s debut solo album Solo, which includes the hit title track “Solo,” “Contento” and “Quiero Saber,” is currently available on all major digital distributors and can be purchased at Del Bravo Record Shop in San Antonio.
