katieleeledezmacoy2016Conjunto is usually dominated by male performers, only a select few women have been able to break through to become stars and Katie Lee Ledezma hopes to be the next on the list.

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter has been nominated for Song of the Year at the 2016 Conjunto of the Year Awards presented by the South Texas Conjunto Association. This will be the second straight nomination in that category for the young performer .

“It feels great! It’s such an honor being the only female singer/songwriter of Conjunto to be nominated this year,” Ledezma told Tejano Nation. “Being one of the few new female artists of Conjunto and to be in a position that I am right now, which is nominated for Single of the Year, going up against big artists in the industry feels like one of my goals ready to be checked off my list!”

Ledezma’s first original single “Aqui Estoy” is in the same category as Conjunto heavyweights The Hometown Boys, Los Badd Boyz del Valle, Los Garcia Bros and more.

“I also find it impossible to win, but then again nothing is impossible,” Ledezma said. “Even though I might not win, I’m still happy and proud to know that something I wrote from the heart was nominated to be single of the year.”

Ledezma isn’t the only female nominated this year, 14-year-old Lily Garcia of Conjunto ATM is nominated for Drummer Of The Year.

“She is the only female musician that’s nominated this year,” Ledezma said.

Ledezma won Promising New Artist of the Year at last year’s STCA Conjunto of the Year Awards and hopes to add another accolade to her resumé.

“I’d also like to thank everyone that took some time out of their day to vote for me,” Ledezma said. “I truly appreciate every single one of y’all’s vote. Thank you so much! Let’s hope for the best!”

The singer is already working on a new project, but couldn’t reveal details at the moment.

“There is something big planned for me in the future,” she said. “Something I’m not allowed to say yet. But let me just say, I can’t wait to show you what’s next in my musical career. In time you’ll know God willing. God Bless!”

The 2016 STCA Conjunto of the Year Awards will take place at KC Hall, 150 N. Ohio Ave., in Mercedes, Texas, on Sunday, July 17, 2016.

“I wish everyone that’s nominated at this year’s Conjunto Awards the very best of luck,” Ledezma added.

Here are the nominations for the 18th Annual Conjunto of the Year Awards, that will be dedicated to the late Gilberto Garcia of Los Dos Gilbertos, who passed away last September.

Shelly Lares releases latest single from upcoming album, ‘Es Por Tu Luz’ [AUDIO]

ShellyLuz-cover“Little Miss Dynamite” Shelly Lares has released the second single, “Es Por Tu Luz,” from her upcoming album on Friday (June 17).

“I love it for several reasons,” Lares told Tejano Nation. “First, it’s straight up Tejano and very danceable, but mostly ’cause it was written for me about my relationship. I am in a great and happy place in my life. It expresses that side of my life and I love that I can share it with my wonderful fans!”

“Es Por Tu Luz” is the follow-up to the Tejano Hall of Famer’s latest hit “Trato Y Trato,” released last year.

Why the long wait between singles? Lares has been busy working with and producing music for other great female vocalists, including two songs for 2014 Tejano Music Awards Best New Female winner Crystal Torres and two tracks for 2015 Tejano Music Awards Best New Female nominee Anjelique.

Lares also released a duet, “Hoy Tengo Ganas De Ti,” with Tejano music legends Tortilla Factory last year.

Lares will also be hosting Shelly’s All-American Showcase once again this year at the 2016 Tejano Music National Convention in Las Vegas on August 5 – 6, more info at VegasTejano.com.

“Es Por Tu Luz” has been released to radio and will be available at your favorite digital retailer soon.

Genyva 2Singing since the age of four, Genyva is back with a brand new album that will leave you wanting more of this Mujer De Palabra.

The singer hosted a Facebook Live listening party on Sunday (June 19) where the artist played a snippet of each song from her upcoming album. The full length CD will have a total of 12 tracks and will include a combination of rancheras, cumbias and ballads. The album will also include hits like “Cosas Del Amor” featuring Stefani Montiel and “No Sabes Nada del Amor.”

Tejano Nation had the chance to visit with the singer and asked her how she came up with the name of the new album, if and when she plans to have a radio tour and what her expectations are for the new album.

The title Mujer de Palabra comes from Genyva’s personal experiences and how she has dealt with challenges in the music business.

“I was told that I would never make it in the business because I didn’t have a certain look,” the singer said. “I wanted to come back and show everyone that I am a woman of my word and I’ve made it.”

Genyva went on to say she now thanks her naysayers for doubting her. It has only made her a stronger artist and person. A radio tour is also in the planning stages the latter part of July with dates in Texas and possibly Mexico.

“I feel that this album is very relatable to everyone,” she said. “It deals with love, infidelity and real life situations, I want to voice for everyone who’s different and wants to be different.”

During the live feed, Genyva stated she was away from the music business for five years after being diagnosed with cancer and went on to say she’s now been cancer free for two years.

The singer plans to hit the road very soon and already confirmed dates in Dallas and Houston in the month of September.

For booking information on Genyva, contact Mayra Dee with Cielo Entertainment at 956-905-4088.

Lorenzo Lopez, brother of Mazz co-founder Joe Lopez, posted an update to friends and fans of the Tejano star via Facebook on Monday.

“Hello friends and fans of Joe Lopez Mazz,” he posted. “I got back from visiting with my brother Joe last night…we had a beautiful visit. He had just gotten back from Huntsville, they transferred him there because of the floods. I told him about Thursday night’s benefit dance where so many Tejano artist got together in his support.”

The benefit dance was held at Far West San Antonio on Thursday night and included appearances and performances from Tejano stars that are close friends and supporters of Joe Lopez. The money raised will go to help exonerate the singer, who was convicted in 2006 on multiple sex offense charges involving a minor. He was sentenced to 32 years in prison, but because he will serve the sentences concurrently, they amount to 20 years in prison.

“He broke down and got emotional when I told him the story of the man, who told me his testimony about being locked up for 22 years before being exonerated with the same charges Joe Lopez has today,” Lorenzo Lopez continued on Facebook.

The singer plans to show his appreciation for the benefit with a personal letter.

Joe also told me he is going to write a thank you letter to Rudy Lopez from Far West asking if Rudy will read it to his fans at the club and TV station,” Lorenzo Lopez posted.

Joe Lopez’s full prison term would end on October 27, 2026. He is eligible for parole on October 26, 2016.

Da Krazy Pimpz released the official video for their latest single, “Te Vez Buena,” on Monday.

The track is the second single released from the band’s latest album Historia De Mi Vida and a cover of the 1992 hit from Panamanian Reggae artist El General.

“It’s a very catchy tune I used to hear as a kid that always stuck to my head,” Da Krazy Pimpz’ Eddie Jimenez told Tejano Nation. “I thought it would sound great as a cumbia with our flavor.”

“Te Vez Buena” has been making some noise without any radio airplay in Mexico, according to Jimenez.

“Since our CD came out, this song has been doing awesome in Monterrey without it being released, it has been catching like wildfire there, so releasing it and recording a video for it was a must to our fans,” he said.

“Te Vez Buena” will be released on an international level this Wednesday on Radio Notas and Monitor Latino, the biggest radio release websites both in the U.S. and Mexico.

Historia De Mi Vida is available for digital download from the TejanoNation Amazon MP3 store, just click here.

Regional Mexican singer Chiquis Rivera, nominated for Mi Artista Regional Mexicano at 2016 Premios Juventud, spoke to the media about her covers of Selena Quintanilla hits for her throwback theme of the ‘Queen of Tex Mex’ at this year’s awards show.

Earlier this week, a video was released of Chiquis performing a tribute for the late Tejano star for Premios Juventud. The annual awards show is planning a retro/throwback theme for this year’s broadcast. As a result, it had been announced that Chiquis would be paying tribute to Selena, a lifelong idol of the 31-year-old singer.

Selena fans gave harsh criticism of the performance and Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, defended Chiquis’ performance with a comment on the Selena Quintanilla-Perez Fans Facebook group.

“You people need to stop the critic I think she done a fair job,” Quintanilla commented. “I know that Selena would have congratulated her, that is the kind of person Selena was. If Chiquis felt like singing the songs as a tribute Me and my family are ok with it, many girls sing Selena’s songs and its an honor that they do that.”

Chiquis is confirmed as one of the many stars who will perform at the thirteenth edition of Premios Juventud, which take place on Thursday, July 14 at 7 PM/6c on Univision.

Hugo Guerrero: Most in-Demand Independent Record Producer

Hugo Guerrero (Lupe Moya / LM Media)

Hugo Guerrero (Lupe Moya / LM Media Solutions)

By By Ramón Hernández Contributor

By Ramón Hernández
Contributor

Today, Hugo Guerrero is Tejano music’s most in-demand independent record producer.

It all started at about the same time he made musical history when he took a Colombian music genre, tweaked it, introduced it to a Tejano audience, and it became an overnight sensation in 1994.

Since then, it’s been all uphill for him as he continues to add more musical notches to his belt. Truth-be-told, as a musician, he has been accomplishing, achieving and climbing up the ladder since he was a little boy.

“On my sixth birthday, my father Genaro, who sang and played a mean harmonica, gave me an accordion to, as he said, ‘break it or tear it up.’ Instead I surprised him and learned how to play it,” Hugo said during an interview at the Hispanic Entertainment Archives.

At 11, Hugo mastered the piano, than he couldn’t wait to enter Christian Junior High School where he learned to play drums, the marimba, guitar, bass and congas.

Incidentally, Hugo’s mother Blanca Rosa Leal de Guerrero used to sing with a mariachi. Therefore his musical talent was inherited.

In 1973, the elementary school student joined Martín López and a group of Laredo Martín High School kids called La Onda Chica.

“That’s also about the same time that an uncle in Mexico had a Hawaiian tropical group and I would sneak in, put a record on the turntable, grab an instrument and play along with his records, so cumbias come very naturally to me.”

Two years later, Hugo joined Chacho and the Maximillians as a keyboard player. However, his first big break came in 1978, when he joined and toured Mexico with Sergio Ruiz y Grupo Santa Cecilia. When Sergio was unable to show up, Hugo had no choice but to sing lead vocals. And, that is when he became a lead vocalist.

From 1983 to June 1989, Hugo formed part of Johnny Hernández and Third Coast. Then he, Balde Muñoz and Laura Canales formed Fandango USA featuring Hugo on lead vocals and Laura on female vocals. However, he felt limited, quit, and formed Party Band who churned out The Party’s Just Begun plus The Party’s Over, his first two hit albums.

As for the band’s name, the long-blonde-haired vocalist said, “I was invited to eat at a fancy restaurant, which required invitations. So when they called and asked me what name I wanted my table reserved under, I could not think of anything and just said, Hugo Guerrero and party.”

A most important point is that by 1989, Hugo was already producing tunes for La Sombra and Fandango for Freddie Records in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Eventually Hugo rejoined Fandango USA and in 1994, they made history with a monster hit titled “La Charanga.”

“This day we had done nine songs and we needed a tenth tune as a filler when this tune was suggested, but I was very reluctant to do it because it was too cartoonist for me,” said Hugo. “It was a tune I really didn’t want to record it, so we didn’t expect much from it. I didn’t remember the intro and I couldn’t remember the melody, so I started out by imitating ‘La Cocaleca.’ We improvised, then I added some rap and that was it.”

Little did they realize it would be the standout tune in the album and when people yelled out for them to perform it during live performances but they really didn’t know it.

“So we have to relearn it. Now we call that song la levanta muertos (wake up the dead). We knew something had happened, but didn’t know what until we had arrived for a gig at T-Town and there was a long line to get in. In fact there were so many people they had to call in the police to direct traffic. Since then I’d had to sing that song at each and every gig.”

Needless to say, “La Charanga” took Hugo and Fandango to Calle Ocho in Miami plus many new places, especially in Mexico where they shared the stage with Los Reyes, Los Socios Del Ritmo and many other top groups.

Here in Texas you could break out the accordion and play a polka but Mexico was more tropical and we even started dancing with sombrero’s habaneros and white pants. We even did a commercial for Coors in Beverly Hills where I say, ‘puro sabor, pura vida, ahhh.’ We also played for President Bill Clinton when he was running against Bob Dole in 1996.”

Then the hazel-eyed charangero took a sabbatical and went to work as a producer/recording engineer at Freddie Records in Corpus Christi in 1999.

In 2001, Hugo earned a Grammy Award for Leyendas y Raices, which he produced in 2000. Other kudos read: Carefully sculpted by producer Hugo Guerrero, these singers (Freddie, Sunny Ozuna, Augustine Ramírez, Carlos Guzmán and Joe Bravo) put all of the fun in this collection … Refreshing keyboard harmonies and melodies provided by Mr. Guerrero meet gladly with uplifting accordion work and timeless declarations of love by “the boys.”

He also did some producing at studios in the Rio Grande Valley, for most of Hacienda recording artists in Corpus Christi, plus Creatia in Dallas.

In 2002, he and Janie Olivares created Nightmare Audio Productions and he took off as an independent producer.

Asked how many albums he has produced, Hugo said, “I already lost count. The last time I counted it was approximately 130 and that includes genres such as norteño and banda for well-known artists to bands and vocalists that nobody knows. And that does not include my creations as a music arranger plus mastering the audio for Daniel Baldwin’s latest movie soundtrack.”

Add to those credits mastering the latest compact discs for Rubén Ramos, Art Tigerina, Serapio Herrera and Nikki López.

“I’m so busy I’m now on automatic. So don’t ask me for exact numbers because I’m an artist. I am not good at office work, so in reality, I never sat down to keep records, or create a chronicle of what I’ve done.

“Right now and all this year, I’m hungry. I’m on a roll. And, I’m giving my productions a big push because I still have several homeruns left in me,” Hugo said.

To book the recording studio or his band, one can contact the now New Braunfels, Texas resident at (830) 822-2357.

The duo released a snippet of the track back in March and have finally released the song in full. “Ya Te Olvide” was written by Juan Villarreal and produced by Eric ‘E-Rock’ Avalos at Avalos Recording Group (ARG).

“This was a long awaited project and I’m excited for its final release,” Aisha told Tejano Nation. “I had the opportunity to work with Eric Avalos on ‘Volar’ by Sarah Monique where I was a featured artist on background vocals.”

TejanoMusicVideos.com posted a photo of the alleged letter from the singer online. This is the second letter that the website has posted from the former Mazz frontman and co-founder.  A letter from Lopez was posted just over a year ago.

This second letter dated July 9 2016 and addressed to the same person as the first letter, starts off with a prayer from Lopez to the addressees.

Lopez writes about the hot weather this summer, adds that he is ready to head home and he is “innocent of this false charges.”

In November of 2006, Lopez was ordered to serve a 20-year prison sentence for the molestation of a 13-year-old relative at his Rancho Viejo home on the charge of aggravated assault of a child. The jury also ordered 8 1/2 years for a second count of aggravated assault of a child, and four years for indecency with a child. The terms will run concurrently.

The former singer writes about the death of Emilio Navaira, Mazz co-founder Jimmy Gonzalez and his upcoming parole. Lopez will be eligible for parole in October 2016.

In 2014, DNA evidence was turned over to Lopez’s lawyers, but the retested findings have yet to be seen.

The video, directed by Jose Gonzalez and produced by Ryan Bazan, was filmed at the Guadalupe Culture Arts Theatre in San Antonio.

“This is what Sunny Sauceda is about,” Sauceda added. “We love to play. We go out, do the gig, say hi to our fans, spend time with them and then go right back to our families.”

The two-time Grammy Awards winner wanted to release a track with a positive message after what the singer had experienced in the past couple of years.

“I wanted to put out a song with a positive message,” Sauceda said. “I lost my dad about two years ago and then my son was born the following year. So, this single are three words that I live by…DIOS, FAMILIA, y MUSICA, all in that order.”
