A candlelight vigil will be held Thursday for Tejano music legend Emilio Navaira in Houston.

Houstonians are expected at a candlelight vigil for Emilio, also known as “El Rey Del Rodeo,” which will be held at a local Houston landmark, Dorado Western Club, famously known as El Dorado Ranch.

Dorado Western Club has opened its doors to Tejano fans for decades bringing acts from all over Texas including the late Emilio Navaira. He was set to perform at El Dorado on May 28th.

Monday was a sad day for the music industry all around, but especially in Texas. Pictures, memories and music flooded social media following the sad news of his passing. The news broke late Monday night of the passing of the Tejano mega star, who had just performed over the weekend in Mexico at Arena Monterrey to a record breaking crowd.

It wasn’t long ago that Emilio had made headlines following a tragic bus accident which almost claimed his life, as well as the lives of his band members in 2008, after a show in Houston.  Fans gathered for prayers to show support for him and his family and it was with a lot of courage and strength that Emilio managed to make a miraculous recovery and was able to return to the stage for his adoring fans.

Today, he leaves an immense sadness in the hearts of many Texas natives.

In 2008, Emilio Navaira’s sons, Emilio IV and Diego, performed “Juntos” at Premios a la Musica Latina in San Antonio to honor their father, who had been critically injured in a tour bus accident just days before the event.

The Tejano music legend was scheduled to perform at the awards show at Majestic Theater on April 1, but was in a medically induced coma at a Houston hospital after the tour bus he was driving crashed into freeway barrels in the early morning hours of March 23.

Emilio underwent five brain surgeries to relieve pressure in his skull and eventually returned to the stage in April 2010 to sing at a fundraiser at the Pearl and gradually put his band back together. However, the Tejano star passed away of an apparent heart attack on Monday, May 16, 2016. He was 53.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Navaira family during this difficult time,” the singer posted on Facebook with the video. “Please accept this song requested by the fans, along with our most heartfelt condolences.”

“Juntos” is hit ballad from 1992 and one of Navaira’s most known songs.

“With the passing of Emilio Navaira, we were bombarded with people who wanted a particular song as tribute from me,” Veronique told Tejano Nation Radio. “It wasn’t something I necessarily expected. I appreciate the man, I definitely aspire to be him in a performance aspect, as a performer, as entertainer as it comes to the legacy that leaves behind.”

Accompanied by pianist Joe Mattingly, Veronique, wearing a beautiful black gown, belted out a soulful rendition of the powerful ballad at the Newman Catholic Center in Iowa City, Iowa.

“It was a little nerve-racking…It was the first time I ever performed that song,” Veronique added.

The video, which has been viewed over 30,000 times, also showcases photos of Navaira with fans, friends and family.

Veronique, a Best New Female Artist nominee at the 2014 Tejano Music Awards, plans to release her sophomore album, Mi Año Dorado, in June.  The first single from the album, “Te Entrego Mi Corazon,” is out now.
