Veronique Medrano, a six-time Tejano Music Awards nominee, born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, has been selected to sing the national anthem and perform a few songs from her new album at the San Antonio Rampage “Chimuelos” game on December 27.

Veronique, an avid supporter of the San Antonio hockey team, is elated to finally be able to combine her love of Tejano and hockey into one bow this holiday season.

When asked why she wants to share her music this way versus other means, “I have a wonderful relationship with the folks at the San Antonio Rampage,” she said. “I’ve been to multiple games throughout the year that I’ve lived here in San Antonio and I really want others to see that we are celebrated in hockey. As an avid hockey fan, it’s an honor to have them not only pick me to sing the national anthem but to create an event like this just for the fans.”

Outside of a few posts on Twitter and a teaser photo here and there on other social media platforms and a teaser on her youtube “Vlogmas” video, this is the first that fans are hearing of new music to be released.

“This year has been full of surprises, but yes, to answer the question simply, there is new music coming out this year leading into the new year,” she said. “The record is one I wrote from start to finish and collaborated with Mike Torres III from La 45, the producer on my new record. We’re all gonna be saying Hola to 2020 y Adios to 2019.”

Come out with music artist Veronique Medrano and watch Chimuelos de San Antonio take on the Texas Stars! Tickets range from $15-$24 on https://groupmatics.events/event/puroparty or call Bo Molina at 210-444-5659. The event is for all ages.

Joe Lopez to begin Freedom Tour in Houston as victim rights advocates criticize decision

Latin Grammy-winning singer and convicted rapist Joe Lopez has been granted permission to return to Houston, Texas, to relaunch his career, even though he was originally excluded from the city his victim calls home.

Lopez was paroled in March 2018 after serving 12 years of a 20-year sentence for sexually assaulting his 13-year-old niece in 2004.

As part of the terms of his release, Lopez was ordered to register as a sex offender and remain outside Harris County, where his young relative lives.

However, the 69-year-old man now plans to organize his return with a concert with sold-out tickets in Houston at El Rodeo nightclub on December 13, after Texas Board of Pardons and Parole officials decided he could set foot in the area “for employment purposes only” citing his “satisfactory compliance with parole since his release,” according to spokesman Raymond Estrada.

“In making the decision, the parole panel reviewed his satisfactory compliance with parole since his release date of March 2018,” Estrada said. “Additionally, the board recognizes the importance of employment as being a critical component to successful re-entry for offenders, and if public safety is not compromised, we support such initiatives.”

The ruling, granted last week, has been heavily criticized by Andy Kahan, who represents Crime Stoppers Houston and has been a supporter of Lopez’s victim for years.

“To pick Harris County as your first choice when you could’ve gone anywhere in the state from our perspective sends a sinister and subliminal message,” Kahan told Fox 26 Houston. “To me, the message that this sends to sexual assault victims and any victim in the community is that your rights are circumvented by the rights of a convicted felon.”

López’s manager, Sandra Vallejo, insists that her client, who maintains her innocence, deserves to rebuild her life while seeking exoneration.

“For every person against him, there are three more who support him,” he said.

His lawyer, Allison Clayton, added: “Joe is eager to act again because he loves his fans so much.”

The Houston concert will mark the first on Lopez’s Freedom Tour.

This will be the first performance for Lopez since being paroled from prison in March 2018.

The Grammy-award winning singer’s career came to a halt in 2006 when he was convicted of raping his 13-year-old niece. He served 12 years of a 20-year prison sentence.

The 69-year-old singer is trying to relaunch his singing career with a sold-out performance Friday night at El Rodeo in Houston. He had to get approval from the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles for the event because of an original condition of his parole included not be allowed in Harris county, where the victim in his case lives.

That condition was modified recently solely for employment purposes, according to the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole, because of his satisfactory parole compliance since being released from prison.

“In making the decision, the parole panel reviewed his satisfactory compliance with parole since his release date of March 2018,” said Raymond Estrada, spokesperson for the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole. “Additionally, the board recognizes the importance of employment as being a critical component to successful re-entry for offenders, and if public safety is not compromised, we support such initiatives.”

David Beck and Sunny Sauceda add Tejano style to 'If We Make It Through December' [VIDEO]

When he first fell in love with Tejano music two years ago, San Marcos native David Beck, a musician/singer/songwriter, heard it from the best.

Beck saw Selena’s last televised performance Feb. 26, 1995 at the Houston Astrodome where she donned her now-famous purple outfit and belted out hits from her “Amor Prohibido” album.

“The songs were so good,” Beck said. “The production was so good and everyone was playing their butts off.”

Forever changed, Beck, a folk-indie-country artist who doesn’t speak Spanish, consumed all music of the Tejano genre and then put pen to paper.

“I loved the music so much that I started writing tunes in that style,” Beck said.

Beck released his album of Tejano music in English, “David Beck’s Tejano Weekend,” in late September. The disc is an unusual concept, but it works. His mix of rancheras and cumbias, backed by an accordion and led by his gifted, melodic voice, makes you want to dance a cumbia despite the language.

Now, Beck has teamed with Tejano music’s 2019 Entertainer of the Year Sunny Sauceda for a Christmas duet, which is a remake of Merle Haggard’s “If We Make it Through December.”

The two met through mutual musician friends in the industry and Sauceda said they had something else in common, too.

“He’s doing something that Tejas Records wanted me to do about 20 years ago is do Tejano music in English,” Sauceda said. “And that’s exactly what David Beck is doing, which I find so intriguing. His voice is so unique. He sings really pretty.”

Sauceda, who is currently recording a single with producers in Mexico, said he was excited about recording in English with a Texas music artist like Beck, which is a first for Sauceda.

Sauceda said it was fund recording the Christmas due with Beck and thinks Beck can bring a new demographic of fans to Tejano music from Anglo/Caucasian fans to Tejanos who don’t speak Spanish.

“He sheds light on our music via his platform,” Sauceda said. “I think that he brings that attention to us. I think that’s really important.”

“We have a lot of Tejano fans who don’t understand Spanish,” Sauceda added. “If they could understand it, I think it would make it a little more popular.”

Beck said he had a few naysayers who balked at his idea of singing Tejano music in English but said he couldn’t argue with how happy the music made him feel.

“I can’t argue with that,” Beck said. “The fans have been so great,” he added.

Beck describes Haggards’ “If We Make it Through December,” as a gritty life song that his father, also a musician played a lot when Beck was a child.

Grupo Potente returns as Eficaz with new single and label

A journey that began over thirty years ago for the Quintanilla brothers has reunited them for the first time in 16 years. Anthony and Esteban, along with long-time Potente drummer Johnny Rodriguez, as well as JR DeLeon and Steven Cavazos, both former members of Kingsville-based group La Fe, form Eficaz.

This collaboration is a dynamic and versatile band with a unique sound. Featuring a variety of vocal stylings and venturing into different genres, Eficaz continues to improve upon an original sound that was established as a fan-favorite years ago.

During the 1990s, Potente, as they were formerly known, worked tirelessly to establish a regional, national, and international following. After having success with such hits as “Hombre Muerto,” “Quisiera Tener Alas,” “Me Haces Quererte Mas,” and “Linda Morenita,” Potente would disband for a brief period in 2000.

The Quintanilla brothers would once again come together for one final project under the name Potente, in 2003. Having each established life some 200 miles apart, they decided that the rigors of road life were too much to overcome.

Carlos Rodriguez owner of Discos Solcar had reached out to Anthony Quintanilla in 2016 and offered a record deal, but at the time Potente was not ready to return to the music scene.

In early 2019, Anthony told Rodriguez, “We’re ready.” Of course with the agreement that they would change their name to EFICAZ (Effective). The name change is a way of leaving everything in the past that contains good times and some bad times.

The band many knew as Potente is now more mature musically, vocally, and is definitely making that obvious with their new single “Historia De Amor” penned by Eduardo Anguiano, who has written songs for Lucky Joe, Siggno, Jay Perez and more.

Eficaz is finishing up their complete album and is set for release in February.

Out with the old and in with the new, EFICAZ!

Grupo Mettal shows off their diverse musical influences and ability to tackle any style with their latest release, “En Tus Brazos,” a haunting ranchera about a love that’s over but far from forgotten.

Accordionist and vocalist Elio Ramirez is a fan of San Marcos, Texas-based country group the Randy Rogers Band, and transformed one of the group’s early hits, “In My Arms Instead,” from a country music ballad into a soulful ranchera filled with longing and feeling. “En Tus Brazos” is accordion-driven and highlighted by Ramirez’ sad, powerful vocals.

The lyrics tell of a love that haunts a man’s mind as he longs for the love that he lost. The song shows off Ramirez accordion and vocal skills as well as his talent for taking a song that he loves from a different genre and adapting it into a song that best shows off the group’s Regional Mexican sound and style.

The single is an impressive release from the group’s debut album, which is now set for a Jan. 1, 2020 release date from Discos Solcar.

The motivational, danceable ranchera, “Vive,” beautifully combines the powerful voices of up-and-coming vocalist Savannah Votion with top Tejano vocalist Stefani Montiel for a song that’s not just for women but anyone in need of inspiration.

Obviously, both women, who recently won awards at the 39th annual Tejano Music Awards, can sing a variety of styles, and together, their voices ignite the ranchera as they sing about living your life to the fullest and following your dreams.

Savannah V recently commented about what the song meant to her as well as the involvement of one of her longtime idols, Stefani.

“Vive is such a powerful message,” Savannah said. “I spoke with my producer (Gabriel) Zavala about a song I wanted for my daughter giving her advice on life and how to live in this crazy world.”

After Savannah recorded the song, she learned that Stefani would be singing with her.

“I received a call from Gabriel telling me that Stefani wanted to be on my track,” she said. “I was shocked, I was crying. I was emotional because I’ve looked up to this woman all my life and she has been there for me throughout all my career with little hugs and gestures and she’s always giving me advice! With this being said anything, I mean anything is possible!”

If you want to hear a song to move and motivate you, and hear the talented female voices Tejano music has to offer, take a listen to “Vive.”

Los Palominos do not perform as planned on Joe Lopez much-touted Freedom Tour

Los Palominos took to social media to address false rumors the band was a no-show for their scheduled performance with Joe Lopez on Dec. 21 in Palmview, Texas.

It appears there was a disagreement backstage between the Grammy-winning group with of Lopez, who is on a much-anticipated, much-publicized Freedom Tour, since being paroled from prison in March 2018.

One of Tejano music’s top bands, Los Palominos, led by brothers Johnny and James Arreola, arrived for a planned concert Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, at Buchanan’s Music Hall, but ultimately, did not perform. In videos posted to social media, both sides tell their story, but it was fans who suffered in the end when they did not get to see the full line-up the show promised.

“Like” Tejano Nation on Facebook

According to a video posted on social media Saturday night by Johnny Arreola, who apologized profusely to fans for the group’s absence from the stage, the group arrived in Palmview, a city in the Rio Grande Valley near McAllen, after traveling several hours for the performance, only to have their request for equipment to be moved so the small stage could accommodate the group denied by management of Lopez. This failure to cooperate forced Los Palominos to cancel their performance.

In a video from, Ben “Bam Bam” Ramos, musical director for Joe Lopez, he says he never was made aware of any stage accommodation requests by Los Palominos. He did say there were “a number of technical difficulties” with the sound system at the venue in Palmview.

“I was never communicated from anyone in (Los Palominos) crew or their management of their technical needs nor was Sandra Vallejo (Lopez’ management) at that time while we were there in person at the same venue,” Ramos said.

“I was never communicated or given the opportunity to even accommodate their needs,” Ramos added. “I never got the chance to even go to the negotiation table and talk to them and say, ‘Hey, let’s work this out.'”

“Like” Tejano Nation on Facebook

In another video on social media posted Sunday, Dec. 22, by Guero Lopez, who served as DJ for the Dec. 21 show, discussed the incident and confirms that Los Palominos were in no way no-shows for the concert and did arrive as he spoke to them live at the venue. However, due to reasons beyond his knowledge, he said, the group did not end up performing. Guero Lopez also said he was denied an interview with Joe Lopez nor was any post-show fan interaction allowed with Joe Lopez, as is normally the custom at Buchanan’s.

“(Los Palominos) are so humble and so easygoing,” Guero Lopez said. “In my opinion, for (Los Palominos) to get upset and not do the show…I’m basically guessing some harsh words must have been exchanged or something to that effect to where it would upset Los Palominos.”

Hopefully, the rest of Joe Lopez’ tour, which was met at the outset by criticism from victims’ advocates, will continue smoothly without further issues as fans seem genuinely excited by the singer’s return and Joe Lopez has brought much publicity with his comeback.

“I wanted to do a seasonal song and also in the spirit of giving have the proceeds go to a non-profit for a good cause like Angeleyes,” Jose Ricardo told Tejano Nation.

The duet is the first time Jose Ricardo and Ilyssa teamed up on an official song.

“Ilyssa is a good friend of mine and having her be part of this project with me was the icing on the cake,” added Jose Ricardo. “Her and I have sung together on the outside, but never in a project together.”

“White Christmas” from Jose Ricardo and Ilyssa Saenz is available now at hiphaciendastore.com for $5.00 with all proceeds to benefit the AngelEyes Foundation.
