Convicted murderer of Selena wants new trial

The woman who killed Selena wants a new trial. Yolanda Saldívar is serving a life sentence in prison for murdering the Queen of Cumbia in 1995.

According to court documents, Saldivar filed a petition on March 28 claiming the prosecutor, Carlos Valdez, withheld evidence that may have been favorable for the defendant during the murder trial in the late 1990s. She claimed after 23 years, he presented the evidence to the public during a Spanish media interview on March 16, 2018.

“The petitioner paraphrases Mr. Valdez’s media interview where he stated that he and the defense counsel, the late Mr. Douglas Tinker, discussed what [evidence] would or would not be introduced to the jury,” the filing read. “How could this be? It is the jury, no less, that would decide the fate of the petitioner, between [life] in prison and [freedom]. The jury, NOT the defense or the prosecutor is the trier of fact of all relevant material evidence and they alone should and DID determine between conviction and acquittal.”

The petition was dismissed because Saldívar filed in the wrong court, she filed the petition in district court and must seek permission from the Fifth Circuit. An appeals court has already ruled the evidence, a pair of white high top Reebok sneakers and a black baseball cap is immaterial to the case.

Saldívar initially filed a writ of habeas corpus in September of 2000, only for it to be dismissed three months later due to her having filed in the wrong convicting court, records state.

The 58-year-old Saldívar is eligible for parole in 2025.

Selena was killed on March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas by Saldívar, who was the founder of her fan club and manager of her boutique.

The life and legacy of Selena are back in the headlines following the claim by her convicted killer, Yolanda Saldívar, that there is evidence that was never seen by her defense attorneys and because of that, she deserves a new trial.

According to court documents, Saldivar filed a petition on March 28 claiming the prosecutor, Carlos Valdez, withheld evidence that may have been favorable for the defendant. She claimed after 23 years, he presented the evidence to the public during a Spanish media interview on March 16, 2018.

Now, Rudy Trevino of KIII-TV in Corpus Christi, Texas, and host of the Tejano Gold Countdown and “Domingo Live,” got an exclusive look at the evidence in question for the first time since Saldívar’s trial back in 1995.

Tortilla Factory has returned with a new single, “Cariño de Mis Cariños,” featuring new co-lead vocalist Lia G and the premiere of the official music video.

This is the new sound of the next generation of the legendary band now led by Alfredo Antonio Guerrero, son of founder Tony “Ham” Guerrero.

“We are excited and grateful to have this opportunity to continue this 47-year-old legacy, institution going post-Tony ‘Hamm’ Guerrero and El Charro Negro,” Alfredo Antonio Guerrero told Tejano Nation.

This is the debut Tejano single for Lia G, who has spent most of her career recording and performing with Latin superstars Celia Cruz, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Jon Secada, to name just a few. Now, the songstress is set to make her mark in Tejano music beginning with her version of “Cariño De Mis Cariños.”

“It takes me back to my childhood days of my mom always singing rancheras,” Lia G told Tejano Nation. “This song is very dear to my heart. I am thankful and grateful to be represented by three-time Grammy Award-nominated Tortilla Factory and its legacy of bringing all kinds of genre fusion into the Tejano world.”

The track was produced by 14-time Grammy Award-winning producer Gilbert Velasquez.

“I was so eager and honored to work with one of the greats and it was such a pleasure to record for him,” said Lia G. “This song turned out so pretty and it was because of his talent in being the arranger and producer. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did recording it.”

As a little girl, one of Lia’s big hero and inspiration was the late Latin music icon, Selena, as she began performing songs from the “Queen of Cumbia” as a little girl in Los Angeles, California. She studied dance and music along with many years of vocal lessons. She recorded songs as part of a very special project for Children Uniting Nations, a non-profit that is dedicated to reshaping the lives of at-risk and foster youth through positive mentoring and academic advocacy.

“Cariño de Mis Cariños” is available now at digital music platforms. Learn more about the next generation of Tortilla Factory at their official Facebook page, Alfredo Y Tortilla Factory.
