Conjunto and Tejano music legend Nick Villarreal, known to many as Nicky Snick, passed away on Sunday (July 30). He was 66.

Villarreal was hospitalized on July 29 after suffering a cardiac arrest and was in critical, but stable condition on life support in the ICU, according to reports. He was taken off life support late Sunday and passed away.

The music legend had been diagnosed with diabetes for many years and talked about it in an interview with Rancho Alegre Radio in 2013.

Villarreal was part of the musical Zimmerle family and learned to play the accordion at the age of 5 by his grandfather James Zimmerle.  He eventually started his own conjunto with his brothers Roger, David, and cousin, David Zimmerle, and recorded his first 45 on Toby Torres’ recording label.  He then recorded under San Antonio-based Joey Records.

“Nicky Snick” is known for his unmistakable, easy-going goofy cumbias and he credits the many conversations he had with his mother, María Luis Zimmerle-Villarreal, as inspiration for many of his greatest hits.  Some of those hits include “Kool-Aid con Hielo,” “La ‘Not to Worry, ‘” and “La ‘I Gotta Go.'”

Stevie D. hits Tejano by storm with ‘Como Fue’ release [AUDIO]

Stevie D. is classic, bold Tejano sound with something fresh and new.

“So good it should be on an eight track,” he says.

His musical beginnings started at the age of 11, playing the guitar at his local church in Brownsville, Texas.

At the age of 19, Stevie served his country in the Navy during Desert Storm. He always felt the passion for Tejano music during this time. He was honorably discharged in 1991 and returned to Brownsville, where his love for music reconnected and he joined a local cover band, where they would play at weddings and quinceneras.

This kicked in his enthusiasm to do more in the industry. The next local band, Rio Express, Stevie D sang for two years, then moving onto a new cover band, the Texas Shooters, from the Rio Grande Valley.

Singles with Lorenzo Lopez, brother of Joe Lopez, and Brando Mireles were recorded, but were never released.

Stevie D. joined Joe Lopez Y La Nueva Imagen Mazz, after the breakup of Lopez and Jimmy Gonzalez. Stevie began his vocal interests, while he was working as a road manager for Joe Lopez. Soon he made his way beside Joe Lopez as a back up vocalist. Memories were made and a great fan base was established. July 4, 2003 was Stevie’s last performance with Joe Lopez Y La Nueva Imagen Mazz.  After a 15 year lapse from the Tejano industry, Stevie reunited with La Nueva Imagen and former members of the Joe Lopez era group.

Stevie’s persistence drove him to contact Brando Mireles and they both agreed they wanted something new, but still carry on the classic Tejano sound.

“Como Fue” is a classic, smooth jazzy ranchera and the lead single from Stevie D.’s album to be released this fall. Mireles and Stevie D produced the track, with 14-time Grammy Award winner Gilbert Velasquez joining the arrangement, along with his guitar and mixing skills. Grammy winner Chente Barrera on drums and Val Maltos on keyboards.

Follow Stevie D on his official Facebook page, @StevieDRecords.

A.B. Quintanilla owes more than $87,000 in back child support, according to a report.

KRIS-TV reports, documents from the Texas Attorney General’s Office show the 53-year-old musician owes child support for one of his children.

Tejano superstar Jay Perez and his wife Roxane helped a San Antonio woman that has been without home air conditioning throughout these hot summer months.

The couple decided to help someone in need after Roxane watched a news story on WOAI-TV about an elderly lady that was also in need.  That lady had already been helped by an other good samaritan, so Jay and Roxane reached out to find another in need of help, Lucy Garcia.

Jay and Roxane surprised the 75-year-old former Santa Rosa Hospital worker with a new air conditioner window unit at her home on Wednesday.

“One window unit goes a long way,” Roxane told Tejano Nation. “Especially for somebody 70, 80, 90 years old, who has medical needs. It makes a huge difference in their day.”

Jay jumped at the chance to help someone in need.

“We just decided to do something good and for the grace of God we were able to reach out to this lady and make a difference,” Jay told Tejano Nation. “Do something nice for somebody we don’t know and that was the whole concept, that was the whole idea.”

Jay and Roxane believe others in the Tejano industry will also step up to help out.

“We wanted to challenge his brothers and sisters in this business to step up and do the same thing,” said Roxane. “If we can find the time and funds to help somebody, then we know a lot of other people can too.”

The Grammy winner, who currently lives in Miami, Florida, says he doesn’t know why he made the Top 10 Most Wanted List.

“Putting myself in the top ten is totally unfair. There are people who have killed other people…that I do not deserve,” he said. “Mine is a family court case and I’m in with other people who have done bad things.”
