The song was co-written by Gerardo “Jerry” Alvarez and Miguel A. Lopez featuring production from Eddie Perez of La Calma along with Richard Rosales of Grupo Siggno.

The production collaboration is a reunion as Rosales engineered La Calma’s debut album Ya Llego released in 2009.

Destiny Navaira premieres video for ‘mariacheño’ version of ‘La Preferida’

Destiny Navaira will celebrate her Mexican-American heritage with the Sept. 15 release of the single and video for the “mariacheño” rendition of her solo debut album’s title track, “La Preferida.”

Navaira said she chose the song’s new version — a mix between mariachi and Norteño, her traditional Mexican costume that she dons in the video, and the video premiere date, all with her Mexican roots in mind.

“I’m fifth-generation Texan but whether people like it or not most of us (Tejanos) come from Mexico and I think it’s important to remember that,” Navaira tells Tejano Nation. “That’s why we’re such a special people. We have a lot of history. We have a lot of culture there. I just want people to remember that.”

The song, “La Preferida,” is one that was originally done on Navaira’s solo debut album in a ranchera style and the vocalist said the song “captured the whole essence of the album” as well as proved to be a song that would lend well to the mariachi style. The new version is being touted as “mariacheño” and was recorded in Monterrey, Mexico with Manuel Herrera, head of her record label, Unimusik.

Joining the 28-year-old Navaira as she belts out her vocals will be her younger brother, Rigo Navaira, and he appears in the video as well. Navaira said she enjoys continuing the legacy that her father, Raulito Navaira, and her uncle, the late Tejano icon, Emilio Navaira, began, of performing together as siblings.

“I think it’s always cool that we work together because of course, it reminds me of my dad and my uncle,” said Destiny. “Me and my brother, we have a really strong relationship as far as our music. We write together. We do all of that together. We’re on the road together. So, to do fun things like videos and recording in the studio, to see, I think, each other grow as artists, is a really great thing.”

Both Destiny and Rigo dress in traditional mariachi-style outfits for the video. Navaira’s dress came from a retailer in Monterrey, called Rodeo Country that has costumed well-known Mexican artists.

For Destiny, the dress is more than just a costume for the video.

“The idea behind the dress is definitely, I’m from Texas but I’m recognizing my roots,” Navaira said. “I’m pushing my music in Mexico. I’m trying to bring that younger generation back to the Tejano sound, back to Texas music, and I think that’s really where it’s going to start.”

Navaira said she wears the dress with the utmost respect and recognition of her unique Mexican-American heritage.

“I want to show the Mexican people that I understand that, no, I’m not from there but my roots are here and I just want to make them a part of my music the way they made our family a part of their heritage and I really appreciate it,” Navaira said. “And that’s really what the dress is for. Also, that I’m proud to be a Latina. I’m proud to be of Mexican descent. It’s a big part of who I am. It’s a big part of who La Familia Navaira is.”

The video shows the many facets of who she is as a person and performer, Navaira said, and she hopes that comes through to her fans.

“I think that this mariachi version of ‘Preferida’ shows all kinds of sides of who I am,” Navaira said. “It shows me being a singer. It shows me as a young woman. It shows me as a diva. It shows me as a proud Latina. I think this video, it captures that, and I’m really excited for everybody to see it.”

Celebrate the eve of Mexican Independence Day with the video premiere for the mariachi version of Destiny Navaira’s “La Preferida.”

Longtime Tejano vocalist and entertainer Bobby Pulido, who celebrates 25 years in the music industry, sipped a beer as he chatted with his fans Sept. 15 during a Facebook live stream that included a special anniversary concert announcement and an impromptu greeting from his famous father, Roberto Pulido.

Pulido, 47, shared personal moments and details with his fans, including how he was so nervous before he took the stage for his first-ever performance in East Bernard, Texas, that he vomited backstage. In a sweet moment, he also showed off his infant son, Rodrigo, who turns nine months old on Sept. 16.

Pulido was laidback and friendly as he openly shared his appreciation to fans from both sides of the border for their support throughout his 25-year career.  He casually switched back-and-forth from Spanish to English as he answered questions from the fans and talked about various topics, including how he planned to return to college and his plans to become a lawyer if his music career did not succeed.

“I wanted to be a lawyer,” Pulido said, in Spanish. “I recorded my first record, ‘Desvelado,’ without really knowing what would happen.”

But as fans all know, “Desvelado” was a hit and the rest is Tejano music history.

On a more personal topic, Pulido even discussed how he overcame depression due to the pandemic and not being able to perform.

The performer then announced an Oct. 30 concert performance in Mexico City – without an audience due to the pandemic – that will mark his 25-year anniversary as a Tejano artist who has met with much success in Mexico.

The crooner’s father stops in for a quick hello during the live stream and the two, who obviously share a close bond, laugh and reminisce together.

Early in the video, Bobby watches a video made by his fans and gets visibly emotional as he talks about a fan who passed away recently.

Sonja De La Paz premieres video for sophomore single ‘Se Acabo’ ft. Joe Ojeda

With her upbeat debut single, “Contigo,” songstress Sonja De La Paz produced one of this summer’s pop cumbia sensations, but on her sophomore single, “Se Acabo,” listeners will hear a deeper, even darker, side of her voice. The video for the new single premiered on Wednesday.

The mood indeed changes on “Se Acabo” as De La Paz takes listeners on a journey of heated, heartfelt heartache but her talented vocals remain constant.

“I feel like more people can relate to heartbreak more than, unfortunately, finding love,” De La Paz said, in explaining why the song was chosen as the follow-up to “Contigo.”

The slow, slinky cumbia features one of the singer’s well-known bandmates from Tejano vet Pete Astudillo’s band, Tekno Mex, Joe Ojeda, well known as the longtime keyboardist for Selena y Los Dinos.

However, De La Paz didn’t enlist Ojeda’s participation in the song for his keyboard skills.

“While we were talking about this project, I sent him a message asking if he would be interested in being featured on the song so he was super excited,” De La Paz said. “He said yes right away.”

“But then I told him he had to play the accordion, and he was scared,” De La Paz laughs. “The accordion’s not his main instrument so he had to brush off the cobwebs and practice a little bit.”

But Ojeda did so well on the song that he told De La Paz he is now getting requests for his accordion skills. Ojeda will be featured in the video for “Se Acabo,” too.

“He was totally cool with jumping on the accordion,” De La Paz said. “He did a really great job. We wanted to make sure to feature him in the video also.”

The video for “Se Acabo” was shot in downtown Laredo’s Siete Banderas, a scenic bar currently closed due to the pandemic but that provided an optimal shooting location.

“There’s so many different location settings that you can grab from just being in one spot,” De La Paz said.

LaDezz releases soulful single ‘Me Quedo Yo Sufriendo’

The latest single from LaDezz is “Me Quedo Yo Sufriendo,” a heart-wrenching polka with a traditional Tejano sound that leans towards the group’s soulful side as member David Ledesma takes on lead vocal duties.

Ledesma pours his heart and soul into the vocals and lyrics that center on lost love that he is unable to yet let go. The keyboard-driven polka was written by Di Marie and LaDezz member Mark Ledesma. Lisa Mar is the group’s third vocalist.

The song shows off the band’s versatility and that of David Ledesma’s skilled vocal stylings. While he portrays through his vocals the hurt and pain of lost love, he really lets loose during the last 30 seconds of the song as he growls with emotion and passion while showing off his vocal range.

“Me Quedo Yo Sufriendo” is definitely worth the purchase off of the group’s website where their music is exclusively offered.

Fans will get a chance to set the playlist for an upcoming exclusive live streaming performance from the award-winning singer including winning an ultimate live stream package that features AirPods, an iPad, a $150 gift card, and Ford merchandise.

“We’re really excited about it,” said Montiel. “The fans get to choose whatever they want me to perform and it’s going to more of an unplugged type version of our shows that way it’s a little bit more intimate…kind of a stripped-down version of what we do.”

Montiel added she’s currently working on new music to follow up her Amor Supernatural album, released in 2018.

Ceci Zavala competes on Netflix competition show ‘Sing On!’

San Antonio singer Ceci Zavala showcased her vocal skills in the season premiere of Sing On!, the new singing competition show that premiered Sept. 16 on Netflix.

“It was by far the best experience I’ve ever had and probably ever will,” Zavala tells Tejano Nation about her appearance on the show. “It was amazing!”

The fun, fast-paced music contest, hosted by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actor Tituss Burgess, features players singing their hearts out and try to hit the right notes to win up to $60,000. There is only one judge and it is the vocal analyzer, which determines the skills of the singers based on their accuracy but contestants get to vote others out during each round except for the singer that scores the highest, who is saved from elimination.

The show took place in London, England, before the pandemic, and Zavala stole the show with her talent during the premiere episode titled “Party Playlist,” singing karaoke style from songs like “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 to “Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus and more.

The contestants spent a lot of time together before the show having dinner and getting to know each other days before filming, according to Zavala, which made it that more difficult to vote against them.

“We became friends,” she said. “There’s now way I’m going to be able to eliminate one of these guys. But, yeah, it was a twist and it was cool and it all was fun.”

Without hoping to give away a spoiler for the episode, Zavala’s vocal talent took her a long way. “I’m definitely in the show from the beginning to the end,” she said. “Making it to the show in general is just a great opportunity. But, yeah, the fact that I actually stayed there for quite awhile was pretty, pretty cool.”

Zavala plans to release her debut solo single “Tik Tok” on Sept. 25 to all streaming platforms. It’s an electro-cumbia version of the 2009 hit song from pop star Kesha. She was a part of two collaborations released last year with electro-cumbia artist Cesar K-oso, including a cover version of “The Middle” from Zedd, country singer Maren Morris and duo Grey, and “Donde Que Quiera Estés,” the 1994 duet originally recorded by late Tejano icon Selena and the Barrio Boyzz.

IRVING, Texas (Sept. 21, 2020) – Finally … they’re here! Stripes stores have released the final two 2020 Selena cups in the four-cup limited-edition series commemorating the 25-year music legacy of the beloved “Queen of Cumbia.”  The new cups are now available for purchase at participating Stripes stores.

Selena fans will be able to purchase the final two cup designs, limit six per person, while supplies last at participating Stripes stores. Customers are encouraged to review the Selena cup FAQs regarding the release and sale of the cups at www.stripesstores.com/Selena.

The Stripes team worked with Selena’s sister and CEO of Q-Productions, Suzette Quintanilla, to design the 2020 collection of the music legend and a special Slurpee drink flavor created from Selena’s favorite childhood flavors – sour cherry, lime, and salt. The limited-edition flavor is featured in Selena’s signature purple color.

“I am excited that Stripes and our family can finally share the final two 2020 Selena Cups in the 25th Year Collection with her fans,” Quintanilla said. “These commemorative cups represent Selena’s legacy that continues to inspire all who love her.”

The much-anticipated collectible cups feature iconic looks and photographs of Selena, one of the most celebrated Mexican American entertainers of all time. The first two limited-edition collectible cups — “Selena Legend” and “Selena Painting” – were released in February, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the release of the remaining two cups.

Each new cup has a unique design, with one wrapped in a collage of Selena’s most memorable looks. Named “Selena Collage,” the cup has a red flip-lid. The “Selena XXV” cup is the final of the four and has a metallic finish with Selena’s logo in platinum and a platinum lid. Each cup from the 2020 collection honors Selena’s legacy.

Stripes released a video this morning on Facebook, revealing the final two 2020 designs with 360-degree views of each cup. The cups are also available through the FAVOR delivery app at participating Stripes stores. For updates and information on the sale of the Selena cups at Stripes, visit the Stripes Facebook page. The official hashtag is #SelenaStripesCup.

Stripes stores announced a limited-time special Slurpee flavor on its websiteThis Friday, participating Stripes stores will promote the Selena-themed Slurpee drink for 25 hours and will offer Selena fans a size small Slurpee drink for only 25 cents for 25 hours. The 25-hour promotion begins Sept. 25, at 7 a.m. and ends Saturday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m., or while supplies last.

“We have worked closely with Selena’s family over the years to collaborate on our commemorative cups,” said Senior Vice President Brad Williams, of 7-Eleven (Stripes Stores). “To celebrate 25 years of  Selena’s legacy, we wanted to honor her fans with this special cup collection, and treat our customers and her fans with a Selena-themed Slurpee drink that will be exclusive to Stripes stores.”

Suzette Quintanilla visited the Houston facility that develops Slurpee drink flavors and worked with developers to ensure the taste and color of the new Selena Slurpee drink represented memories of their childhood.

“Selena loved cherry-flavored drink packets mixed with salt growing up,” Quintanilla said. “She would create her own packets and would sell them to friends at school for 10 cents. She enjoyed the sour and salty taste the combination created and adding lime to this made the perfect combination for this special Slurpee drink. I have such great memories of us riding our bikes after school to get Slurpee drinks, so being able to create a Selena-inspired Slurpee drink for just 25 cents is our way to say ‘Thank You’ to all her fans that are remembering her with so much love.”

Customers are encouraged to social distance and adhere to all CDC and local government guidelines while shopping at Stripes stores.

BUDA, TX – September 21, 2020 – (LATINX NEWSWIRE) – Due to the disproportionate spread of COVID-19 among Hispanics and all minorities, the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) will host a webinar with Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Dr. Fauci serves as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and has been an advisor to every U.S. President since Ronald Reagan.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Hispanics experience higher rates of COVID-19 across the board when compared with White Americans; 2.8 times higher rate of cases, 4.6 times higher rate of hospitalizations, and 1.1 times higher rate of death. African Americans also exhibit a similar pattern when compared with White Americans; 2.6 times higher rate in cases; 4.7 times higher rate of hospitalizations and 2.1 times higher rate of deaths.

The U.S. has the second-largest Latino population in the world of over 53 million people and makes up 74% of the labor force in the U.S. With almost 12 million Latinos living in Texas, the state has been severely affected by this deadly virus.

Dr. Fauci accepted TAMACC’s invitation to address Hispanic business and community leaders from across the state of Texas via webinar. Recognizing the amount of confusion and mixed messaging about COVID-19, TAMACC invited Dr. Fauci to speak directly and unfiltered to Hispanic leaders, influencers, and elected officials about the devastating impact this pandemic is having on Hispanics and all minorities.

“We are honored and extremely fortunate to have Dr. Anthony Fauci give us a briefing and recommendations on the best course of action to help mitigate the further spread of COVID,” said TAMACC Chairman Samuel Guzman. “Information and scientific facts are key components needed to reduce the number of infections and deaths among Hispanics and all minorities.”

Immediately following Dr. Fauci’s briefing, TAMACC will host a roundtable discussion and a strategic planning session with Hispanic leaders from across the state. The projected outcome is to develop and initiate plans of action to help our essential and frontline workers survive the deadly pandemic.

“This is not a political issue; it is a health issue,” said TAMACC President and CEO Pauline E. Anton. “This is not a state issue; it is an American issue. We want to arm our communities with information, science, and a clear direction on how to better protect themselves and to make all communities a safer place.”

The webinar with Dr. Fauci, followed by the roundtable discussion, is Thursday, September 24, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Central Time. For those interested in attending, or for more information, contact the TAMACC office or visit the organization’s website or Facebook page.

Rose Elva & The Crew recently released their third single “Solo En Mis Sueños,” along with the group’s first music video.

The slow-style cumbia, written by lead vocalist Rose Elva, is about a woman that secretly likes a man but is too shy to let him know, so it’s only in her dreams she can have a relationship with him but wakes up and realizes it’s Solo En Mi Suenos.”

“When I’m writing an original song, I’m writing from personal experiences, sometimes watching telenovelas,” Rose Elva tells Tejano Nation about her songwriting process. “Sometimes, remembering a dream that I had or either something that has happened in my past life or right now in the present or anything that is going on around me.”

The visual for the track is the first video released by the group and was produced by Sal Gomez of Gomez Productions.

“Solo En Mis Sueños” is available at your favorite digital platform and is the third single released from the New Mexico-based group, which is currently working on their debut album, scheduled to be released in 2021.

“It is all original music that me and my band, The Crew, are doing,” Rose Elva said about the debut disc. “We’re working really hard to finish up the album, using this time (during the pandemic) to create all this together.”
