VAULT Studios, TEGNA’s premier digital content studio focused on true crime storytelling, today announced the premiere of SELENA: A STAR DIES IN TEXAS, its latest major podcast project. The first two episodes of the six-part series are now available on Apple PodcastsSpotifyGoogle PodcastsStitcher, and on TEGNA’s owned and operated digital platforms.

SELENA: A STAR DIES IN TEXAS chronicles the incredible life, senseless murder, and enduring legacy of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Known to the world as “Selena”, the Tejano superstar’s meteoric rise and tragic death left millions of fans heartbroken. With access to an extraordinary archive of rare and never-before-heard audio from TEGNA’s network of TV newsrooms across Texas, VAULT Studios, the network behind Bardstown and The Officer’s Wife captures the entire story of a superstar, a superfan, and the shocking murder that ended the life of a bright young star.

Twenty-five years ago, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was already a legend in the Tejano music world and on the verge of crossover superstardom. But on March 31, 1995 after an argument in a motel room in Corpus Christi, Texas, Selena’s close friend and business partner Yolanda Saldívar fired a single bullet into her back as she was trying to flee. Selena was pronounced dead a short time later.

In SELENA: A STAR DIES IN TEXAS, VAULT Studios has partnered with TEGNA’s Texas stations to tell the story of Selena’s life and the aftermath of her senseless murder. The podcast takes listeners on a journey through Selena’s early life and rise to fame, examines the relationship between Selena and Saldívar, and the growing tensions that spiraled towards their final confrontation. VAULT dives deep to capture the reaction of friends and family, and what drove Saldívar to murder her closest friend. SELENA: A STAR DIES IN TEXAS also features extensive coverage of the trial and incarceration of Saldívar, including never-before-heard audio of a jailhouse interview conducted by Sarah Lucero, a reporter with KENS in San Antonio. In the final episode, VAULT will explore how Selena’s legacy lives on today in her music, her fans, and in unexpected ways.

SELENA: A STAR DIES IN TEXAS tries to make sense of a tragedy that still has repercussions 25 years later in American music and culture,” said Adam Ostrow, chief digital officer, TEGNA. “With such a captivating story told in VAULT’s unique investigative style, our latest podcast is informative and entertaining for Selena fans, true crime junkies, and music lovers everywhere.”

‘La 45 II’ album is filled with smooth cruisin’ music and happiness

La*45 recently went live on Facebook to present their new production, La*45 II. No, it wasn’t a concert, but a listening session from their recording studio. It was intimate and full of studio and road stories, along with some pretty lofty conversations about music-making and theory. It was mind-blowing, though I think we would have been left in tatters if they’d not been as humble about their talents.

La 45, self-dubbed “the NextGen Chicanos,” is one of those special bands made up of the usual pieces, but also with a powerful 5-piece horn section. Yes, one of those big bands that brings up memories of Little Joe, Johnny y La Familia, Latin Breed, The Royal Jesters, and Tortilla Factory. Compadres Mike Torres III and John Ontiveros, La Familia alums, have put together some pretty impressive elements that not only record great music but reproduce it live to near-perfection. And their long-awaited second studio album has arrived.

The first single, “Como Me Alegro,” was released a year ago while production continued on the album. A hard-driving ranchera with excellent use of the horns and an accordion break, it’s one of those tunes that floats you to the dance floor. Another single is both a tribute to and a collab with the King of the Brown Sound, Little Joe Hernandez, “Traigo Mi .45”. Yes, the band is named for this classic tune and Torres and Little Joe trade-off on delivering the lyrics. A similarly classic-sounding tune is “Asi Lo Quisiste,” with the addition of harmonies from Torres, III’s better half, Amy, and an amazing sax solo.

The horn section gets quite the workout with a couple of sweeping tunes:  The  cumbia, “Cumbia de la Media Noche.” and a samba, “La .45 Anthem.” The anthem includes some amazing drumming, trumpet, sax, and guitar solos from Will O’Rourke, John Ontiveros, Ricky Ray Hernandez, and Estevan Ramirez, respectively. “Moriria Por Ti” has a Roberto Pulido-feel to it with its dual sax performance and Tejano cumbia sound. [Shout out to Ricky Ray for being a Texas State Bobcat!]

Although the album has an R&B feel throughout their repertoire, it is “How Could This Happen,” that shows off that ability–vocally and musically. La 45 is known for their ability to move from Tejano to Cumbia to R&B and back in a live setting, so it’s understandable that they showcase it on an album.

“Solo Un Juguete,” with its Steve Gadd drum intro and keyboard-heavy melody, brought memories of the 80s which saw the introduction of synthesizers to La Onda. [Side Note:  Mazz did a similar drum intro in 1984 with the intro to “Ay Muchacha” from the Standing Ovation album, for all those historians out there.] Mike and Amy Torres collab on another modernized classic, “Con La Misma Tijera.” Herbie Lopez’s organ backdrop injects the classic sound into the tune. “Que Bonito” offers a jazzy tenor sax intro by Hernandez before heading into a signature ranchera.

All in all, La 45 II is a nice package of cruisin’ music that soothes and causes general happiness. At least, that’s what it did for me. And, next time there’s a super dance in San Antonio produced by Henry “Pepsi” Peña and featuring La 45, we’re there!

One more thing. The eye-catching artwork on the cover and in the liner notes is by Chicana artist Bianca Mireles. She’s a West Texan who is now based in New Hampshire. Check out her work on her insta.

And get your copy of La 45 II at La45Music.com. You can get the digital version for $10, or, for $15 download it and receive the CD in a week or so. I did the latter.

Singer and songwriter Jose Ricardo is set to release his second single, “Quiero,” an original song from his upcoming debut album.

“It’s a really, really good cumbia,” Jose Ricardo told Tejano Nation. “Actually I’ve had it in the vault for just a little bit, meaning I’ve had it but no one has heard it really, other than maybe a handful of people so I decided to go ahead and release it.”

Jose Ricardo has spent over 20 years in the Tejano music industry as a vocalist and songwriter with a vault filled with music, enough for more than three albums.

“I have so much original music and I think La Onda needs originality,” he said. “I think originality is really needed and something that is good that brings vibrance to our industry.”

The singer plans to release his debut album in late 2020 or early 2021.

“Quiero” will be available at all digital music platforms on May 11.

David Lee Rodriquez has dropped the official music video for “Empiezo A Olvidarte,” the latest release from his Latin Grammy-nominated album Así Me Enseñaron.

“It’s kind of a breakup song,” Rodriquez told Tejano Nation. “It’s a guy who is still in love with his lady and can’t get her off of his mind but realizes ‘I’ve got to move on’ and he has to face reality and with the video, we put a major twist on the end.”

The video was filmed and directed by Rodriquez’s 15-year-old son.

“I was floored by what he came up with,” Rodriquez said about the video. “That ending changes completely what you would think the song is at first and then you see the ending and you think whoa, now I get it.”

Rodriquez is still on cloud nine since his debut album received a Latin Grammy nomination last year. “Ooh man, what a feeling,” he said. “It feels surreal, whenever Jorge (Marroquin of M Group) called and told me the news, I kid you not, I just looked up at the sky and said, ‘God, Thank you,’ and tears came down my eyes. What an amazing feeling to have your debut CD go that far!”

The singer is working on his sophomore album with multiple Grammy-winning producer Gilbert Velasquez and plans to release it in late 2020 or early 2021.

Little Joe has been entertaining fans for more than 50 years and the music legend is putting his life and music career in a biographical book scheduled to be released on Wednesday, May 13.

The biographical book entitled ¡NO LLORE, CHINGÓN! An American Story: The Life of Little Joe was written by award-winning Texas author Emma Gonzalez.

Many authors have wanted to tell the story of the 79-year-old Chicano and Tejano music legend over the past 30 years but he felt the time wasn’t right until Gonzalez contacted him.

“Her life story is so similar to mine, grew up as migrant kids pickin’ and workin’ in the fields,” Little Joe said in an interview with Tejano Nation radio affiliate La Voz 93.3 FM in Abilene, Texas, last year. “I figured that she would be able to really deliver my message. I’m excited about it and we’ve got some great interviews from so many different people, all walks of life, musicians, politicians, and just all kinds of people and friends.”

¡NO LLORE, CHINGÓN! An American Story: The Life of Little Joe will be available at LittleJoeYFamilia.com and Amazon on Wednesday, May 13.

“I can’t wait to share this book with you all,” added Little Joe.

Vegas Tejano Music Week postponed until August 2021

The annual Tejano Music National Convention, or Vegas Tejano Music Week, has announced the postponement of this year’s four-day event until 2021.

The current COVID-19 pandemic has canceled or postponed many events over the last couple of months and as the global crisis continues, major Tejano music events planned for this summer are making decisions about what to do including organizers of one of the biggest annual Tejano events.

This event, originally scheduled for July, will now take place on August 5-8 of 2021, at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“We will have the same amazing advertised show line-up while adding two to three more headliners and a top Latino comedian host to be announced soon,” said Sarah Chavez, founder of Vegas Tejano Music Week, in a statement. “Due to the continued spread of COVID-19, and the CDC’s prediction for its possible return this fall, we feel this is the best decision for the mental and physical safety of our fans, artists, participants, and producing staff.”

Chavez said other considerations factored into the decision, “We simply want to wait until America returns to a new normal with the expected development of a vaccine before next summer,” she said. “Las Vegas casinos are closed and scheduled to begin opening soon, but no one knows when conferences/festivals, dance clubs, pool parties, etc. will be allowed to return. We wouldn’t want you to miss out on the ‘full’ Vegas Tejano experience.”

“Time is on our side in learning best safety practices,” added Chavez. “We didn’t choose to postpone our show but rather mandated by the current Las Vegas environment.”

The current ticket and table holders will be contacted for ticket and table option policy. For new buyers, tickets go on sale, July 1, 2020. More information is available at 913-397-8850, Monday thru Friday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm central.

“We are determined to continue to keep the Vegas Tejano Music Week event alive, but now more than ever, we will need fans’ attendance to not let the event go away,” said Chavez. “While you wait until the return of Tejano Music to Las Vegas, we will be announcing a new online series and a virtual music fest! Together we will get through this!”

Grupo Alamo drop Rodney Alejandro remix of “Amarte Hasta El Final” featuring Mark Ledesma

Latin Grammy award-winning Grupo Alamo revealed their collaboration, “Amarte Hasta El Final (Ale Remix)” with Rodney Alejandro and Mark Ledesma on May 1.

Alejandro is a songwriter, producer, and remixer, who has worked with many great artists and musicians from Selena, La Sombra, Little Joe Y La Familia to Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and many more.

With this original track from Grupo Alamo’s album, Proximo Nivel, released in 2018, the group reached out to Alejandro with a new concept for the song and their latest single “Amarte Hasta El Final (Ale Remix)” was created, a Latin Pop cumbia influence with some definite hints of R&B.

RELATED: Grupo Alamo receives second straight Latin Grammy nomination

Ernie Gonzales of Grupo Alamo told Tejano Nation how this partnership came together and what fans can expect in the upcoming year.

“I have been following Rodney’s work for some time and loved his productions and the out of the box style he has,” he said. “He had recently done a remix for a friend of ours and that’s how we met and started talking and asked if he would be interested in working together and he was like, yeah send me the tune and let me vibe to it.”

“He got back to me a few days later and said he loved the tune and wanted to experiment with it,” added Gonzales. “We were very excited to collaborate. Rodney is super talented and humble.”

Those not already familiar with the group or with Alejandro, listen to the tune and get acquainted with the expression and music vibe this group has to offer and the production bringing diversity to Tejano music and making this vision come to life for new audiences for generations to come.

“Once I heard the song itself, I realized I needed to bring some serious fire to the track,” Alejandro told Tejano Nation. “What got me the most was the soulful delivery of Mark Ledesma’s vocals. I thought I could wrap the vocals in something modern, yet maintain that classic soulful lover’s song. Drawing on the style of music for cruising from the Chicano Movement, and imagining two lovers who know each other so well that when they dance together it’s like one movement. Sensual, romantic, timeless, and in no hurry.”

“With that visual, I began to work on the production by setting all the classic tones in modern-day electronic production,” he added. “The biggest challenge is breaking from the Tejano traditions. Looks like we came up with some kind of Cumbia – Future Bass Soul Fusion that makes you want to grab your partner and sway all night or just cruise the road holding hands.”

Since the release, fans have shown their support and have brought nothing but positive reactions. They believe this was a huge step in putting a new take on this original track.

“We are thankful and blessed that all of the responses on the new single have been very positive,” said Gonzales. “We were not sure how everyone would take to this version since it is something very different from our normal releases, so we were nervous on the release day. But it’s connected with a lot of fans and that’s a great thing.”

“Grupo Alamo deserves to be recognized for taking the chance to present music that adds not only to their legacy but to Tejano music diversity,” added Alejandro. “These dudes are all great musicians and know that sometimes you have to break a few rules to find new ways to keep your fans listening. So this collaboration was all about love. Love of tejano music, the song’s message, trying different things, and taking chances. They were super awesome to collaborate with and I appreciate them trusting me with their music.”

If you would like to support the new single, it can be found on all digital platforms to listen to, until then we wait for more of what’s to come.

The Uvalde Festival and Events Association, in coordination with Southwest Texas Junior College, produce the annual event that was founded in 1996 by Grammy-winning music group Los Palominos.

Grupo Intocable drive-in concert set for June 6 in Texas

Keeping in line with their role as musical and industry trendsetters, Tejano/Norteño powerhouse Intocable will lead the return of live music in Texas following a more than two-month absence due to the COVID-19 pandemic with a drive-in concert Saturday, June 6, 2020, in Poteet.

According to the group’s website, GrupoIntocable.com, the event is a “concert meets drive-in movie” experience and Intocable’s lead vocalist/accordionist Ricardo Muñoz shared details about the event during several Instagram Live videos posted this week.

The informal videos, featured a bearded Muñoz, who at times puffed away on a cigar, as he addressed a wide and varied range of topics from the reason for the concert to the availability of portable bathrooms.

Muñoz, who spoke in Spanish, said the concert, which will be a full live audio and video production, is an opportunity to support the two-time Grammy-winning group’s behind-the-scenes staff and crew who have been grounded for months due to the coronavirus pandemic putting an end to live touring, and most importantly, to make music again.

Muñoz even discussed the issue of portable bathrooms in one video, encouraging concertgoers to limit their food and drink intake so as to avoid bathroom breaks and having to leave their vehicles.

Concertgoers could pay anywhere from $75 to $300 per car – with a maximum of four people per car – for the June 6 event which will enforce social distancing with space between parking slots and strict rules enforced which include that concertgoers remain inside of their vehicles for the concert’s duration.

Muñoz said the concert’s site in Poteet near the Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds was chosen as the venue and able to grant permission and coordinate the concert to meet safety standards and guidelines regarding the coronavirus pandemic.

Other drive-in concerts, including a May 14 free concert for first responders by country star Keith Urban in Tennessee, took place recently and could possibly be music lovers’ only option for live music during these times of the coronavirus.

In an interview with BBC News, Urban said the experience made him feel like he was in the Pixar movie, Cars, as he played to all of the car headlights. Urban did say he was not sure about the long-term viability of drive-in concerts due to logistical challenges.

Intocable’s drive-in concert will allow attendees to bring their own food and drink, including alcohol for those ages 21 and up, as long as refreshments are consumed inside the vehicle.

Fans will also have two large video screens on each side of the stage and the option of tuning in to a designated FM radio station to enjoy the concert.

Intocable Drive-In Concert Event Details:

Grupo Siggno are set to release a new album this week in the form of an EP titled Pelicula Vol. 1 on May 29.

Siggno frontman Jesse Turner shared details on the upcoming EP that will feature six songs recorded before the current worldwide pandemic.

“If you don’t know what Pelicula means, it means movie, our movie, volume one,” Turner tells Tejano Nation radio affiliate Magic 106.5 FM in Lubbock, Texas during a recent interview. “We got to write those songs, we go to do those songs before this pandemic, before this COVID-19, and it stopped us from recording the next six songs. So, I said, you know what, let’s give people what they need which is music.”

Pelicula Vol. 1 will include the hit songs “Yo Te Amo”, “#Hashtag”, and the latest release, “Como Una Pelicula”, along with three other songs.

Turner added that fans can expect another EP and full album over the next year from the Latin Grammy-winning group. “The next songs will probably be out in December and it will be Volume 2,” he said. “And then probably in March of the following year, 2021, it will be the full version, the full story, the full volume, the full album, the full movie complete with an additional four songs and it will be one complete album.”

Pelicula Vol. 1 from Siggno is scheduled to be released at all digital music platforms on Friday, May 29, 2020.

Just days after announcing their first drive-in concert, Intocable added another drive-in concert date for Sunday, June 7, 2020, in Hidalgo, Texas, according to an Instagram video today from the group’s lead vocalist and accordionist Ricardo Muñoz.

The multiple Grammy-winning group announced their first drive-in concert for Saturday, June 6, 2020, near the Poteet Strawberry Festival grounds. The drive-in concert concept is a creative but not yet fully tested option for live music during these new times of social distancing and increased safety concerns due to COVID-19.

Concertgoers could pay anywhere from $75 to $300 per car – with a maximum of four people per car – for the June 6 event which will enforce social distancing with space between parking slots and strict rules enforced which include that concertgoers remain inside of their vehicles for the concert’s duration.

Texas Latino released their new album From The Heart Of Texas on March 6. The disc features new songs along with the group’s greatest hits from the 1990s re-recorded featuring Tejano music icons.

Ram Herrera, Ricardo Castillon, Stefani Montiel, Marcos Orozco, and Alfonso and Marco Jaime are featured on the new album.

The album contains 15 songs and already boasts a couple of radio hits including “Buscare Un Amor,” and “Te Tengo Que Olvidar,” featuring lead vocalist Gabe Rivera.

Songwriter and producer Severo “Sevy” Contreras of Texas Latino tells Tejano Nation the collaboration, “No Me Ames” featuring Castillon and Montiel, was a perfect song for the vocalists to record. “It’s such a beautiful song, if I could get the right artists to do it, it will be perfect,” he said. “Ricardo knocked it out of the park. He’s one of the guys that can just do international and a little bit of everything, and Stefani also, she kicked some butt.”

Little Joe has entertained fans for over half a century. “I enjoy doing live recordings,” he told Tejano Nation radio affiliate La Voz 93.3 FM in Abilene in a recent interview. “There’s so many beautiful old songs that I recorded when I was a kid and people look for them and can’t find them and constantly ask for them. So, this gives me an opportunity to go back in time and bring back those beautiful old songs.”

Better Than Ever from Little Joe is scheduled for release on May 29, 2020 at all digital music platforms.

“I’ve got a couple of surprises in the recording,” he added. “You’ll find out when you hear them.”
