Big Circo vocalist and accordionist Alex “Big Boy” Salinas passed away on Thursday (June 15), after battling several heart attacks and a stroke.

According to sources, Salinas had been dealing with health issues recently, including an operation and hospital stay in April.

The musician, who composed many hit songs for Big Circo and Grupo Control, leaves behind a wife and four daughters. A GoFundMe account has been set up for funeral and medical costs, as well as the financial burden that his family will encounter with his passing.

“He was a great musician, producer, amazing teacher, lovable husband, father, and friend,” according to a post on the GoFundMe account. “Alex always showed compassion and support for anyone in need while he was here with us and for that we are grateful. Now the shock and sadness of losing Alex has left his family dealing with an emotional toll that alone is hard to bear.”

Big Circo released their latest album Póngase Alerta in September 2015, their first album in 10 years.

Tejano Nation will have more information as it becomes available.

About Big Circo

An A. B. Quintanilla side project from the early 2000’s, Big Circo has been described as a fusion of hip hop and traditional Tejano sounds. The band used traditonal Mexican/Tejano/Conjunto musical intruments, such as the bajo-sexto, accordion, conga drum, and the guiro, while creating an alternative sound.
