Joe F. Carreon, Jr, known to many as ‘El Chiquito’, died on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the age of 77. His son, John Carreon, announced the sad news on social media, saying that his father had a brief illness and that funeral arrangements are pending.
Joe Carreon was the owner and host of MusicaTejanaRadio.com, an internet radio station that he launched in March 2013. He had a passion for Tejano music and culture and dedicated his life to promoting and preserving it. He was inducted into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame in 2017 for his outstanding contributions as a broadcaster.
His broadcasting career spanned almost 50 years, starting with KGUL in Port Lavaca, Texas 1974. He worked at several other stations, including KFLZ in Bishop, Texas, KMXO in Merkel, Texas, KEDA in San Antonio, and the original KLUB in Victoria, Texas. He retired from his job at AT&T before starting his online radio station.
His son, John Carreon, said that his father’s radio station was his pride and joy and that he would keep it running as long as he could. He also thanked the fans and listeners for their support and prayers.
Joe Carreon ‘El Chiquito’ was a beloved figure in the Tejano community and will be greatly missed by many. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence and passion for Tejano music and culture.
