La Mafia are one of the most influential bands in Latin music with roots in Tejano and the multiple GRAMMY-winning group celebrated 40 years in the music industry in 2020. A 40th-anniversary celebration tour was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic but as this year comes to an end, what does La Mafia have planned for 2021? A series based on their 40-year history.
In an interview with Fierro HD on Tuesday, La Mafia frontman Oscar De La Rosa shared the details with afternoon host Bo Corona. “It’s time to tell La Mafia’s story,” De La Rosa said. “It’s time for people to know what we’ve been through in these 40 years. What it took to get us to where we are and what it’s taken us to maintain the success of La Mafia 40 years later. I think it’s time for us do a series, you know, the story. The untold story of La Mafia.”

La Mafia’s legacy can be traced back to 1980 when the group was formed with Armando Lichtenberger Jr. at a cantina owned by De La Rosa’s father playing hardcore Tejano tunes.
In 1992, La Mafia became the first Tejano group with a platinum-selling album. Estas Tocando Fuego, the group’s sixteenth studio album, eventually received triple platinum certification.
The Houston, Texas-based group has earned two Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, including this past November for Best Tejano Album with Live In Mexico.

After the success of Selena: The Series, currently the #1 show on Netflix since its premiere on Dec. 4, and the unprecedented increase in Google searches for artists featured on the show and not mention Tejano itself, now is the time to tell more great stories of legendary Tejano artists.
No word yet on when we can expect a La Mafia series, but Tejano Nation will have full details as soon as it is available.
