The highly-anticipated Selena: The Series on Netflix was ranked as the top show for the streaming giant over the weekend in the United States, Mexico, and many other countries in Central and South America after the series debuted on Dec. 4.
Selena fans believe they know the late Latin music icon’s story from the 1997 movie, but Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, shared the difference in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “The difference is that the series is about the actual journey of us being a family, struggling to understand and figure out this musical part of us that we didn’t really realize that we had,” Suzette explained to ET’s Deidre Behar.
The series goes more in-depth than the Selena movie starring Jennifer Lopez. It’s as much about the singer’s family as it is about the “Queen of Cumbia.”
“This series is more about all the questions, the little things that Selena’s fans have been asking throughout the years like, ‘Why was this song created or why this?'” she noted. “It’s more about filling in the full story of our journey and hopefully inspiring those who are going on a journey of their own. And whatever their dream is, to understand this was not a rise to fame right away. It was not like that. It took quite a bit of years and a lot of hardship as a family and being able to get where we were before she was ultimately taken from us.”
Some fans have also been critical of The Walking Dead actress Christian Serratos portraying Selena, but Suzette addressed that as well. “To me, at the end of the day, it’s about the story and not one person on this Earth is going to look exactly like my sister and act like my sister,” she said. “It’s not just about physically what you look like, it’s about what you can deliver in regards into what the story is all about.”
Suzette also explained why it was important for the Quintanilla family to continue sharing Selena’s story and how she and her family reacted when they watched the series for the first time.
The story about a Mexican American family achieving the American dream and showcasing Tejano music and culture to the world, that is Selena: The Series. The first of the two-part series is now streaming on Netflix.
