Jay Perez ‘strongly believes’ fifth nomination is the one for Latin Grammy win

The 21st annual Latin Grammy Awards are set for Thursday, Nov. 19, with a reimagined telecast anchored in Miami featuring performances from cities around the Latin world. Nominees were announced in September, including Best Tejano Album. “The Voice” Jay Perez received his fifth nomination for his 25th Anniversary Contigo album.

In an interview with Mega 94.3 FM in Eagle Pass, Texas, the crooner says this is his year. “I strongly believe in this album, I strongly believe in the producing of the arrangements that came with the album and I think we have a good shot of bringing the Grammy home this year,” said Perez. “I think that the competition in this category alone is pretty intense.”

Other nominees for Best Tejano Album include Siggno, La Mafia, South TX Homies, and El Plan.

“I’m a big fan of Siggno, a big fan of La Mafia, and I’m a big fan of our music,” he added. “So, we’re going to cross our fingers and say some prayers and I truly believe that this year is our year. But then again I say that every time we get nominated for a Latin Grammy. We just haven’t had the opportunity to win one. We haven’t gotten the chance to bring one home.”

The release of 25th Anniversary Contigo celebrated the 25-year solo career for Perez and this is the second straight nomination for the singer, who was nominated in 2015 for Un Amigo Tendras, which also earned a Best Tejano Album of the Year win at the 37th annual Tejano Music Awards.

Perez began his career as the lead vocalist of legendary groups Latin Breed and David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales.

“I have been in the business for about 25 years,” said Perez in an interview. “I started professionally with the Latin Breed, I sang for them and recorded an album with them. Then I went off to sing with David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales for a couple of years.”

Perez has released many hit albums since beginning a solo career in the early 1990s.

“I launched my solo career in 1993 and have been doing it since. I have been blessed to have our fans supporting my music all these years,” he said.

The winner for Best Tejano Album will be announced on Nov. 19 during an online pre-show with the 21st annual Latin Grammy Awards telecast set for 7 p.m. CT on Univision.
