Carlos “Charly Boy” Escamilla of cumbia band Super Sueño passed away from complications of COVID-19 early Thursday morning (Aug. 13) at the age of 45.
The band leader, vocalist, and songwriter for the San Antonio, Texas band had been hospitalized over the past couple of months after testing positive for coronavirus, with much of the time in intensive care, according to sources.
Charly Boy was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and is a self-taught musician with early influence from his father who sang Mariachi and played the guitar. Inspired by the movie “La Bamba,” Charly Boy had the determination to teach himself how to play the bass, keyboard, and percussion.
At the age of 18, Charly Boy formed Super Sueño in 1995. What first started off as a band consisting of his cousin and a few friends that loved music has grown into a band that has recorded nine albums and several music videos, including the most recent album Formula De Amor released in 2019.
Super Sueño released its debut album, Encuentro de Amor, in 1999 with Charly Boy as the lead vocalist and bass player and the band has been a strong influence in the Tejano music culture ever since.
