Javier Molina, best known for his 1998 hit single “Cowboy Cumbia,” will have major surgery in January.

The singer and songwriter gave info on the upcoming operation via social media on Dec. 26.

“I was injured in an accident and I will undergo cervical (spine) surgery in San Antonio on January 3, 2020,” he said.

Molina plans to release new music before his impending surgery.

“I will release a new Tejana ~ Norteña song before the New Year,” he said.

The Laredo, Texas native recently shared details on a life-changing event when he was very young.

“I thank God for my life,” he wrote on Nov. 28. “I was only 1 year old when I fell from a third-floor balcony and was in a coma for 2 weeks. When I woke up I was left blind for several days. Today I glorify the Lord Jesus with all my soul!”

Written by Molina, “Cowboy Cumbia” is an incredibly catchy and danceable song featuring a highly contagious, down-on-the-farm type of cumbia beat, punctuated by it’s memorable and catchy phrases. The song single-handedly attracted a whole new generation of Tejano music lovers in the late 1990s.

Molina released his latest album, “Country Musica,” earlier this year.
