Tejano solo vocalist Raymond “Ray Ray” Garcia of Los Agues fame shares his unique rendition of the Juan Gabriel-penned classic, “Costumbres,” as the lead single from his third solo album aptly titled, “2020,” to be released in late 2020.
Garcia got the idea to redo the song, which was famously recorded by legend Rocio Durcal and covered by Tejano’s own queen, Selena, following a dream he had in which the song was playing before he took the stage.
“When I woke up, I remember the song had a really symphonic beginning and I wanted that for my version of ‘Costumbres’,” Garcia told Tejano Nation. “I immediately called Hugo (Guerrero) to schedule a recording session.”
Ray Ray dedicates “Costumbres” as a tribute to Selena, who was his cousin, and he sings the classic with emotion, starting off with a slow intro that leads into a ranchera beat and features a rock-tinged flavor courtesy of the guitar performance by his brother, Jesse Garcia.
“I have always loved this song covered by Rocio Durcal and made famous in the Tejano industry by my prima,” Garcia said. “It’s a tribute to her because she was such an inspiration to us all in this industry. It’s an honor to have covered this romantic song that everyone loves.”
Fall in love with the song all over again. “Costumbres” was produced by Hugo Guerrero at Nightmare Audio Productions. The video was produced by Lupe Moya with LM Media Productions.
