Grupo Imagen announced that Tina Vega is the band’s new bajo sexto player. The 2015 Tejano Music Awards Best New Group made the announcement via a live Facebook feed and on Tejano radio station Magic 104.9 in Corpus Christi on Wednesday night (January 27).
“We actually shared the stage with her at the BNet Christmas party and that’s where we kinda met and we collaborated and we’ve been in contact ever since,” Silvia Navarro of Grupo Imagen said during the announcement.
Vega is a member of Tina Y Los Gallitos and plans to still perform with both bands.
“Super excited to be sharing the stage with these talented girls, my debut show will be at Fan Fair in March,” Vega posted on her Facebook page. “Still working on this hand therapy so I can be at 100% and I’ll of course still be jamming with #TYLG Thanks everyone for your support!”
The 29-year-old musician was injured in an auto accident on December 24 and underwent wrist surgery on December 27.
“She’s on the road to recovery and hopefully, hopefully, by Fan Fair she will be completely ready and she’ll be on stage with us at Fan Fair,” Navarro said.
A benefit has been scheduled to help Vega with medical expenses. The event will be at Houston’s H&H Ballroom on February 6 and includes special performances by Grupo Excito and Sin Nombre, with barbecue plates sold by Fireball Kookers, raffle prizes and more. Donations can also be made online at www.GoFundMe.com/ReinaDelBajo.
